Veruca Salt - Dirty Mind fans

Not sure if this is off-topic, it does relate to P after all. razz

I adore 90's grunge/pop-punk band, Veruca Salt (well not so much after Nina's departure) and I just stumbled across an interview of theirs on Australian music program Rage. Guest programmers on Rage select the track list for the episode they feature on. Anyway, the girls from Veruca Salt chose Dirty Mind as their final song and cited the album as one of their favourite records.

Louise Post added, "This marks our sexual awakening, driving around in your Mum's car with a beer in your hand... Listening to Dirty Mind, checking yourself out in the rear view mirror."

One of the singles from their debut album, American Thighs was entitled, "Number One Blind". After the band broke up, Nina Gordon supposedly references "Number One Blind" on her track, "Number One Camera", and drops these lyrics:

"We were bored, there was nothing else to do
Playing records and posing in the nude
It was Dirty Mind so it was cool"

So there's a useless piece of information for you guys.

I really prefer the Spooky and Split (!) albums to Lovelife, but overall I appreciate their work. And Miki was so damn good looking!!!

back on topic, I loved the first Veruca record and its low-fi production. As much as we love Volcano Girls that 2nd album was too polished already.

Agreed. Bob Rock would not have been my first choice to produce their second LP.

The vocals and harmonies were incredibly tight on American Thighs, whereas Eight Arms to Hold You seemed more like a battle of creative minds, where the writer of each track was immediately apparent in the mix. It was interesting, Gordon's slick pop tracks like "With David Bowie" were in stark contrast to Post's harder rocking "Straight" among others. There was no middle ground - they were no longer working together and there was some tension within the band even during the recording process.

Aside from that, the whole project seemed less innovatative. The witty irreverence in the lyrics of American Thighs was absent from Eight Arms to Hold You and pop production did not compliment the band's style at all. Not a horrible record or anything, just a step in the wrong direction.

I've read that Louise Post and Nina Gordon met at a Wendy and Lisa's concert.
