SAVE THE CHILDREN-film(1973) is this the epitome of black music? Somehow I came acrss this film called SAVE THE CHILDREN...apparently it was a benefit concert from Jesse Jackson's 1972 Expo. Watching these clips on youtube almost brought tears to my eyes because #1 the level of talent that was on that stage that night was AMAZING. The fact that all of those talented artists were at the top of their game AND at the top of soul music is amazing. I couldnt imagine being around in the early 70's. #2, the impowering and encouraging messages in the songs brought tears to my eyes. People underestimate the power of music but these clips really inspired me. Hopefully, they do the same for you..ENJOY!

You beat me to the punch.I was going to ask the same question on Save the Children.Do I think this film is the epitome of black music?I think so.Right along with the Wattstax film,which came out the same year.I see clips of the film on Youtube and they are just brilliant.I'm still waiting for a complete,remastered reissue of this forgotten gem that needs to be seen and heard again.I hear legal issues are holding the movie from getting out again.I pray and hope someday that the issues will get cleared.I hear that Jesse Jackson interviewing Michael Jackson a few years ago saying that they are going to rerelease it sometime soon and the people who missed the period of the early 70's will really enjoy watching it.Peace! | |

I just ordered the soundtrack double lp..I cant wait to get it...what amazes me is that its not that they took has been artists to perform. They took the cream of the crop...I couldnt imagine living back in the early 70's with this much talent tickling my ears on a regular basis | |

 This is one of many Concerts caught on film that need to be brought to light.
I need to grab that 'Save The Children' LP.... I asked a PD at a local AM station about a radio spot they played for years, with the Rev. Jackson saying "save the children" (because it always bugged me , that I didn't know where the audio was from). He told me it was from that LP/ Concert 'Save The Children'. and The station to this day, still use this spot. The radio spot also featured quotes from "Q" & the Comedian Dick Gregory. Twitter and Google all crashed Thursday because MJ's music was that powerful. Also, this film is definitely heavy on talented artists but being a jazz musician and enthusiast, I would say "black" and "music" and "epitome" are most likely found there. All that being said, the Mayfield clip is fucken amazing! | |

Dont get me wrong, Im a fan and yes he's put out good music but Twitter and Google crashed because so many people for so long took his great music for granted and that came into focus now that he's gone. The same thing happened with Aaliyah when she died. If people had an appreciation for music, Twitter should be crashing all the time with people reasearching the music of all the greats. As a jazz head(Im listening to "Crystal Silence" by Return to Forever as I type), I must agree with the assessment of black, epitome and music as it relates to jazz [Edited 6/27/09 10:12am] | |
