Why is Biggie Smalls considered this great genius? I saw the film and i'm none the wiser Why on earth is the portly wordsmith held in such high regard?

Biggie, made his contemporaries, step their up. He had a style all of his own and was in my opinion in a class by himself, because of it. As much as I like Jigga, I don't believe he could have touched Biggie...Big was just that good. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

That music doesnt actually represent his music very well...more so the music speaks for itself. I say the movie was more like a background history. It was quickly rushed together about how he got to his stardom. There was something about the way he rhymed and the way he used his words that was unique. He did not sound like anybody else out there. He wasnt just a regular rhymer but knew how to use the melody of the music to his advantage. Then plus he really pushed Lil' Kim's career because her first album fully represents his clever quotes and wicked rhymes. He is one of the most quoted newer rappers to date. The movie was a smoke screen for his actual life. I actually thought the movie was a bit boring tho. That said, the only thing great about his skills was that he rhymed without writing lyrics, he basically free-styled his own lyrics. [Edited 6/25/09 12:12pm]

Lyrically he was a genius IMO. You could read his lyrics without music and it's like poetry. Plus the fact that he didn't write lyrics and came off his dome with most of his rhymes is impressive to me. But hey, everything ain't for everybody and maybe you're not SUPPOSED to get it.

Yeah that was probably the whole point anyway. Plus he didn't play instruments, he was basically an emcee/lyricist anyway so there wasn't really much to show.

Without Biggie around, Jay-Z is just another rapper, IMO. While he was alive, it made him step his game up. Jay-Z tends to get very lazy in my opinion. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

Jay-Z IS just another rapper, he's rode Big Daddy Kane, Jaz-O, BIG and Nas' coattails until the wheels fell off, now he's clinging to Beyonce to get "mainstream cred".

Jay's still a better lyricist than any mainstream rapper out right now IMO and also rhymes off the top of his head. [Edited 6/25/09 12:46pm]

I'm with you all the way Cynda.
And can we talk about the obvious? The fact that he built this legacy in such a short period DESPITE the 3 media HELL NOs(overweight, too dark and TOO UGLY) shows that the man had substance & charisma to match. He's def a "once in a liftetime" phenomenon.

I love that line And the man presented SUCH a sense of humor through his lyrics, people see the "hardcore" stuff,,,but he was so witty. I think he was the best storyteller since Slick Rick & KRS-One. And nothing sell me like storytelling

That's my beef with the current flavor of hip-hop: No Storyline with a beginning, a middle, and an end Even if it's all made up like Big's song, Got a Story to Tell that was some clever shit! But one of my fave lines is: "Navajos creep me in they teppes." I mean c'mon that's some clever shit.
