Vince Clarke

Music fans focus so much of his synth programming, sometimes Vince's drum programming gets overlooked.

Well, Prince aside...

TEDDY RILEY.

Also gotta give Peter Gabriel massive credit... He and Prince were the LinnDrum pioneers.

I can't remember who did the drum programming 4 Jam & Lewis, but some of that was tight.

Herbie's the Man, and also a friend, but I'm usually digging his earlier stuff (Headhunters, etc), where the drums were live, and Herbie was a MAJOR pioneer in several synths/keyboards, like Stevie was in the early-mid '70s.

Jimmy Jam did all of the drum programming in their 80's work for other artists:

Yeah, I know he did most of it, but I seem 2 remember someone else helping out on the drum programming on some of their productions... Maybe when they were trying 2 cop the New Jack Swing feel from Teddy?

I gotta say thanks, Tony, 4 this thread.

In this age of tired-ass preset loops, with no tempo or fire, it's refreshing 2 reflect on the age of skills.

Drum programming back then was a skill. U had 2 WORK.

Thanks.
