Mary Wilson's solo career in the 80s Hey,
I don't know anything bout her solo efforts, except that she had an album out in 1979. (Is it any good?) But I can't find anything else on allmusic. Holiday was considered for her. I'm sure the writers did not just sent it to Mary when she did not have a career for 3 years? Had she an album out in around 1983/83?

Nope.
There was literally no solo album in the '80s, she had another one out in '91 but that one didn't do nothing since the label it was released under closed shop after its release. She's released some dance hits in Europe and she's carried on a touring career since. She may be putting out a new solo album at the end of this year with the Holland brothers (Eddie and Brian of Holland-Dozier-Holland fame) working at the helm.

So she was double dumb by not taking Holiday.

Well you have to put it up to what you know: Mary Wilson spent the first 20 years of her career as a background vocalist and occasional lead vocalist without being able to establish a real identity. It took her a while before she was comfortable as a solo artist as she is now.

"Holiday" as in the Madonna cut? If she turned that down, I wouldn't say she was dumb, but realistic. Mary's not a bad singer or anything, but she's more middle of the road in style. If it's the same song, she probably felt it didn't suit her on any level and I'd have to agree. [Edited 6/24/09 13:19pm]

[Edited 6/24/09 13:19pm] I don't know what Mary would've done with "Holiday" anyway. It didn't fit her so she turned it down. She wasn't trying to be young, she was 38 around that time, no way would she have agreed to do that.

With her MoR inclinations and her singing style (melodic "songstress" voice and delivery), I can't imagine those lyrics fitting her at all, no matter the arrangement. The one big thing about both Diana and Mary was they never really sang "youthful" stuff even when they were young. The lyrics of that song wouldn't have worked for either them when they were 22, much less 38. In Mary's favor I can say that she seems to know her limits and sticks w/ them. Not the most exciting thing, but probably the smartest thing for her. [Edited 6/24/09 13:38pm]

That's just it....only The Marvelettes really did teenybopper stuff at Motown, reluctantly. They were actually teenagers when they were doing it too. It's funny that Madonna was still doing teen shit when she was 30, so maybe it was NOT Mary who was the stupid one! I actually admire her for NOT going that route. She was a grown woman, so why try to pander to kids who'd laugh anyway?

Because for some ODD reason I relate to THEM than I do the Supremes. I find myself singing "there's too many fish in the sea" then "stop in the name of love" that's for damn sure. Sorry Diana. [Edited 6/24/09 14:02pm] The Marvelettes were FUN...their stuff listens great today cuz it's that pre 66 rock sound that was all about being undignified and and fun. The Supremes (and Diana and Mary solo) were all about beaded chiffon gowns and perfect hair. Nice, but hardly blood pumping. The best part about Supremes stuff for me is the Funk Brothers. The music was slammin'. The Supremes were even George Harrison thought so!

But with the Vandellas and Marvelettes and Temptations and the Pips, they provided the full packages.
