This was an okay episode. Who was the fool who was a childhood friend of Flo's and commented that it was all Flo's fault for getting kicked out of the band? The old gay dude? What kind of childhood friend was that? Dude worked my last nerve.

Sounds like he wasn't such a close friend.

So what did you guys think of her singing? She reminded me alot of Etta James in vocal tone, if not interpretive style. Do you think she could have made it solo w/ the right handling? I'm inclined to think so.

I am not sure what's wrong, but it's probably your fault!

I said it once and I'll say it again. It always bugs me that Flo is portrayed in Dreamgirls as some fat short chick when she was anything but. During her performing career, she was about the size Beyonce is now.

No disrespect to either Holliday or Hudson and I realize they are taking artistic license, but I'm sure some are quite surprised when they see the real article. The real thing makes Berry's comments about her weight look even lamer than they were.

That's because the media has inaccurately portrayed Flo to be as such. Then again, I remember when the movie came out, they actually thought Diane & Flo were sharing Berry as romantic partners so you can't believe everything you read.

I did like the blogs dissing the film and bigging the Supremes' music tho.

They didn't play a single clip that showed how great her voice was supposed to be (seemed pretty average in the 2 songs they did play). I don't know much about her, but it was the right move to make Diana the lead singer as far as I can tell neutral

Sorry she had such a hard life though. To die @ only 32?? Her daughters must have been devastated sad
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

All her kids were under 10 years old when she died, so devestating is just the begining of it. I believe their father died when they were still young too, so their lives were just jacked in so many ways.

How many NON Motown acts lacked videos before 1985? lol

Lol, quite some artists had videos out actually, despite that the videoclip-era was still exploring and at an early stage of developing.

A few that come to mind :

- Andre Cymone - What Are We Doing Here
- Aurra - Are You Single
- Bar-Kays - Freakshow On The Dancefloor
- Cameo - Shake Your Pants / We're Going Out Tonight / Alligator Woman / Be Yourself / Flirt / She's Strange / Talkin' Out The Side Of Your Neck
- Champaign - Of And On Love
- Clarke Duke Project - Sweet Baby / I Just Wanna Love You / Heroes
- Commodores - Saturday Night / Lady (You Bring Me Up)
- Earth Wind & Fire - Serpentine Fire / September / Boogie Wonderland / Let Me Talk / Let's Groove / Fall In Love With Me / Magnetic
- Evelyn Champagne King - I'm In Love / Love Come Down / Give Me One Reason
- George Duke - Dream On
- Jacksons - Blame It On The Boogie / Can You Feel It
- Jeffrey Osborne - Stay With Me Tonight
- Kool & The Gang - (there are many which they released pre-1985, can recall a few but not all though)
- Lakeside - Your Wish Is My Command / Turn The Music On
- Lionel Richie - You Are / Hello / Running With The Night
- Luther Vandross - Never Too Much / It's Over Now
- Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Till You Get Enough / Rock With You / She's Out Of My Life / Beat It / Billy Jean / Thriller
- Midnight Star - Can't Get Enough / Freak-A-Zoid / No Parking On The Dancefloor
- Mtume - Juicy Fruit / You Me & He
- Patrice Rushen - Don't Blame Me / Forget Me Nots / Get Off (You Fascinate Me)
- Prince - I Wanna Be Your Lover / Uptown / Controversy / 1999 / Little Red Corvette / Automatic / When Doves Cry / Let's Go Crazy / Purple Rain
- Randy Hall - I've Been Watching You (Jamie's Girl)
- Ray Parker Junior - The Other Woman / When A Woman Needs Love / Ghostbusters
- Shalamar - A Night To Remember / Dead Giveaway / Over And Over
- Sheila E - Glamorous Life
- Slave - The Word Is Out
- Starpoint - Breakout / It's So Delicious
- Stevie Wonder - Ribbon In The Sky
- Switch - Switch It Baby
- The Time - Cool / The Walk / Jungle Love / The Bird
- Whispers - Keep On Loving New / Tonight
- Zapp - I Can Make You Dance

The list can go on pretty much ...

^^^ When I asked the question, I knew Eric Clapton waited until '85 to do his 1st cuz he distrusted the medium. lol

Motown was one of the few companies that waited quite late for videos to become standard for their artists' promotion. They did a few on Rick James and associated artists, the Commodores, and one onDeBarge, but I can't recall too many Motown vid before 85.

For The Time...I persoanlly loved "Ice Cream Castles". wink

Lol, yeah ... i didn't know about that Eric Clapton-trivia ... interesting.

Including your mentioned Motown artists, i've seen these official pre-85 clips through the years :

- Commodores - Saturday Night
- Commodores - Lady (You Bring Me Up)
- Diana Ross - Missing You
- Diana Ross - Muscles
- Diana Ross - My Old Piano
- Diana Ross - Swept Away
- Diana Ross - Why Do Fools Fall In Love
- Dazz Band - Let It Whip
- Dazz Band - Let It All Blow
- Lionel Richie - Hello
- Lionel Richie - Running With The Night
- Lionel Richie - You Are
- Mary Jane Girls - Boys
- Mary Jane Girls - Candy Man
- Rick James - Give It To Me Baby
- Rick James - Superfreak
- Rick James - Throwdown
- Rick James - 69 Times
- Rick James & Smokey Robinson - Ebony Eyes
- Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me
- Stevie Wonder - Love Light In Flight
- Stevie Wonder - Ribbon In The Sky
- Temptations - Treat Her Like A Lady
- Temptations & Rick James - Standing On The Top

The Diana Ross clip "Theme From Mahogany" is a mix of various scenes and some of those same scenes were also mixed in the video of "Upside Down".
At the time these 2 clips were promoted on tv, though they're somewhat not the same concept-videos as in later years.

Maybe not an official videoclip, but there's footage of Stevie's unreleased movie referring to "Secret Life Of Plants". I'm not shure if, or to what capacity Motown financed this project :

^^^ Geez Shango, you're totally jogging my memory. There were a quite a few I'd forgotten over the years. I remember most all of these you listed, watching them that is lol .
This one was HOT Diana Ross - Swept Away tho Diana wasn't at Motown at this point

Let's see..what I name might be in around 84-85.. can't guarantee the year cool

Mary Jane Girls did "My House" and I loved that one
Lionel Ritchie "All Night Long", "Dancing On The Ceiling", and "Say You Say Me"
Dennis Edwards and Siedah Garret "Don't Look Any Further"...I'm thinking that was Motown

I'd forgotten about Rick James' vids and the problems he had w/ getting them aired in 81-82 or so, but there was also Process and The Doo Rags he did vids for a bit later.

That seems about 85 or so.

Yeah, from 1985 on there came more indeed. Rick James' "Glow" is a fave of mine. Great that Universal released that clip in high quality on a dvd.
Also just saw on Youtube Rockwell's "Peeping Tom" video lol.

Speaking of Dennis Edwards, from the same album. Such a cool vibe in this :

I dig when Ali Ollie Woodson rocketing skyhigh at the end :

Yeah, Vanity 6 was hyping it up back then, and i think Rick got more live-appearances in those years on shows like American Bandstand, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, Midnight Special, Saturday Night Live, Soul Train and maybe some others.
I don't know if BET aired James' videos during the early years of the station though. Great clip indeed by Process & The Doo Rags ! Another solid track from that album is "Searching For Love" :

Man this is a great look back! So much cool music and videos from that era that I'd forgotten about. I wish I got VH1 Soul, I only get Classic. confused 85 was the year of "The Last Dragon". I saw it in the theater and loved it. I can't recall if they did a vid for Willie Hutch's "The Glow".

I loved that era Tempts...Ali Ollie was fantastuc as a lead singer. They got quite hot again in that era. Even tho Diana was at RCA then, I still consider her a Motown artist! cool

Shango, don't make me start posting vids up in here! razz biggrin That Randy/Jermaine post was the bomb and I bookmarked it, BTW.

I'm not shure either if there was a Willie Hutch video.
