This is the second of three Soul Train appearances that Brown did. Every time, Don Cornelius gave Brown the entire show, and he'd perform short sets of songs and talk with Don in between.

This particular clip is from spring 1974. Brown was recording his Payback album at that time. Brown's oldest son Teddy also appeared on this very show, but he was killed in a car accident only weeks after the show was taped.

Sharpton first had met Brown earlier that day at a gathering before the taping of that show. The two connected, and Sharpton soon traveled with the James Brown Show, being Brown's handyman and at some point even road manager.

He also recorded a song with Brown in the late 1970s titled God has smiled on me.

It's a 45 and pretty tough to find. It was released in 1981 on Nashville based RK Records with zero promotion. It's a really odd song ... Basically Sharpton preaches over the music, talking about great men from Lincoln to JFK and RFK leading to Brown. lol In between, Brown sings the refrain, and it also features some very strange backing vocals by Martha High singing "God --- Jesus".

This is a scan of the label. My copy got a blue label though. Note the description on the label. smile
