Speaking of the Beatles, how perfect a tribute to the Beach Boys is "Back in the U.S.S.R."?

Yeah that was a great tribute to "Back in the U.S.A." You've noticed what I've noticed with some of their surf music like "Surfin' U.S.A." and the like, is that they were influenced musically by Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry, you can notice it in their sounds. In some ways the Beach Boys influenced the Beatles in their later career. I doubt Revolver or Sgt. Pepper's would've been created had it not been for Pet Sounds.

As much as I love them, The Beach Boys' admiration for Chuck Berry went a wee bit beyond influence. lol Wilson took the melody straight from Sweet Little Sixteen, added those famous tracked harmonies and created Surfin' USA. Berry sued and won songwriting credit. In fact, some pressings credit only Chuck Berry as the songwriter.

Sweet Little Sixteen (1957)

Surfin' USA (1963)

When you have a chance sit down with the guitar or at a piano and check out the chord progression.

Yeah I heard about that. I thought that was gangsta of Chuck to do that because they obviously "swagger jacked" but as long as the original inspiration got credit (as did Bo Diddley on some songs), it was all good. nod

Their music made me feel all happy inside. lol It was cheesy music though.

They're one of my all time favorites. As spiritual as rock gets. There's pain there, but also healing energy.

Besides the greatest hits everyone knows & Loves, I really enjoy their late 60s-early 70s period. Brian's stuff is really odd (which I quite enjoy) and the others, especially Carl, are starting to come up with some great contributions. Check out the Sunflower/ Surf's Up double pack, or Friends/ 20-20.

And finally, Brian's latest album That Lucky Old Sun has some great stuff on it, it's my favorite thing he's done since the early 70s. Check out Midnight's Another Day, Oxygen To The Brain and Southern California especially.

Yeah, Paul wrote that one in India, 1968 while meditating with the Maharishi... and Mike Love was there as well.

Paul wrote Back in The USSR, Happy Birthday Mike Love and Cosmical Conscious all in India and ann were inspired by the Beach Boys.

I can see why you'd say that.

Actually, Brian Wilson's concept for harmonies came from groups like...

...The Four Freshman (Poinciana) & The Lettermen (I Believe)
