Mary dated Cecil in 1965 (Cecil was barely 18) and they both began working on music together. Mary was already out of Motown by then. In 1967, they married and after Mary signed with Jubilee Records in 1968, the two co-wrote and produced Mary's Servin' Up Some Soul (which featured "The Doctor"). The two had three children, including Cecil, Jr., who later changed his stage name to "Meech Wells" and became a hip-hop producer in the West Coast. Mary and Cecil are said to have had an abusive marriage (her earlier marriage to Detroit singer Herman Griffin was also brutal) and Mary eventually divorced him in 1977. I would say around three years later, Curtis Womack convinced her to date him (I'm not sure what went on there) but I think Mary had a heroin habit by this time, I think Curtis was also using drugs too but I'm not sure. Anyway, the couple also had a turbulent affair. I'm not sure if they married or not. But I think Mary left Curtis around 1988 or 1989. Mary then got involved with another guy but had developed throat cancer the following year. | |
