Tori Amos concert review

I missed the Jay Leno show last night for two reasons.

1. I don't have cable
2. I went to see Tori Amos live

I asked a few friends to tape the Leno show for me. So I'm sure I will see it someday and I'm sure it was great.

I just wanted to post this here for my fellow Tori Amos fans on this site.
wink mr.green music

Tori read my mind tonight, and seduced me like the goddess that she is. She played the three songs I really wanted to hear from Scarlet’s Walk. Your Cloud is so special to me, that I was willing to let it slide if she didn’t play it. I would have said, well, maybe it isn’t as good live, I wouldn’t want to be disappointed. (Like when Caught a Lite Sneeze was without drums in 96. Still great, but a let down, ya know? No offense to Tori at all.) Anywho, In order to numb myself and not be too disappointed if she didn’t play it, I decided it would be ok if she didn’t. Sweet Sangria kicked ass. I LOVE THAT SONG. One down. During the encore; TAXI RIDE. THANK GODDESS!!! I was happy. I was satisfied. That was two.

The rest of the show was pretty damn good, but the seats were interfering with my enjoyment. Plastic bleacher-type seating on the side, so I had to sit at an angle and by the second half of the show, my ass was getting numb, and I knew that it was going to be hard to walk when the show was over. So right at the encores, my friend and I got up so we could stand in the back. That’s when Taxi Ride came on and I was thrilled. “I’m glad you’re on my side.” Before that it truly was hard to enjoy the show, but certain songs would help me forget the pain. I’m so glad we got up because by the time Your Cloud came on, I was free to enjoy it to the fullest.

That songs just gets me. I love clouds and my name is VinaBlue, so the line “Indigo is his own, Blue always knew this” means a lot to me. I have a friend who is so amazing, we feel like we are sooo similar. He’s basically a male version of myself. “Will this Horizontal Line, when asked know how to find, Where you end, where I begin, pick out your cloud.” So exquisite.

I usually cry during a song, and I hadn’t cried yet, so I thought that wasn’t going to happen either. When Your Cloud started I was so happy, and I started to sing along. But I couldn’t finish the first verse. “Do you think, Just like that”…..sob sob sob. I took one look at the clouds behind her and I could barely keep my eyes open. My God I love her. Thank you so much Tori for giving me the perfect show tonight.

A little more about the show: (Note: abreviated setlist. For the full setlist, click here http://thedent.com/scarlet26.html )

Little Amsterdam
Every time I’ve seen her in San Diego, she has played this song and I love it sooo much. One of my favorites live. A little “wink wink” to me because my friend and I used to perform this in coffeshops. “All alone got a girl in the city, HEY!!” I just love the opening chords too.

Sugar
This one is always good too.

Lust
I’ve always wanted to hear this live!!! The drum track was awesome! Matt, the king of the drums. This was so beautiful. It reminded me of “The Beautiful Ones” by Prince for a minute. I wanted her to start singing it “Baby Baby Baby”. It might work well together. Maybe I’ll work on that…

Wednesday
I was happy to hear this one, but I really missed the guitar part. sad I would have rather heard Pancake.

China
Once again, Tori read my mind. I made a dedication cd for my friend and put China, A Case of You and Your Cloud. I was happy to hear all three live tonight. Perfect timing. Like last year, I really needed to hear Winter.

Juarez
This song kicked ass. I had to pull out my TVAB cd this morning to hear it again.

Cornflake Girl
I love this live! She kicks ass on the piano solo, as we all know.

Crucify
I thought this was the best version of the song I’ve ever heard. I really loved the drum track. Very atmospheric. Again, I tip my hat to the drum king.

Spring Haze
Always a treat to hear this one.

Hey Jupiter
Beautiful.

A Case Of You (solo)
A nice surprise.

Concertina
Again, made me get my TVAB cd out.

Your Cloud
The perfect ending.

Even though my seats were yucky (hard and uncomfortable), I did have a great view. I was in section 5 and when I used my binoculars I had a perfect view of her. Perfectly framed like a tv screen. The Rhodes, Wurlitzer and Jon behind her, and the entire Bosendorfer from top to bottom including the reflection of the piano stings on the inside of the cover. Something about pianos… they are so aesthetically pleasing to me. Black, shiny and beautiful… and with Tori playing… magical.

Thanks for the post! I absolutely loved Tori's new CD (and all of her old ones too!) so I am more than just a little disappointed that it looks like I won't get to see her live again!!

Sounds like you had a fantastic time! I'm glad she did Your Cloud - sounds like a pretty special moment. Pancake would have been my request I think.

Anyways, thanks for the update!

I loved the show, especially from the 4th row. I just wish she played "Waitress" and "Spark", two of my favorites.

Yeah, Pancake would have been cool, definitely next in line.

There is supposed to be a second leg of the tour through North America. It will be much more extensive. I hope you get to see her!!!
