Spontaneous throwdowns! I just LOVE when a singer is in the moment and feels the shit out of their song and they break out in a spontaneous vocal hit. While I have no doubt Yvette could memorize a complexly structured vocal, you can tell she was just in that moment and it came to her and out of her. The hit is at 2:29 - 2:32 :
I don't know if there is a musical or technical term to refer to this but this is what inspires me the most about singers. When it just flows and nothing can be done to stop it 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

except when I see her Saw her at a street fair in LA about 4 or 5 years ago and she let the audience sing the whole set She would grab the mike, the song would start she would wail once and then throw the mike out for the crowd to finish. Musta been on some shit that day And I can't really blame it on the sound system cuz I saw Millie Jackson at the same fair a couple years ago and she tore the shit up. I gotta see her the next time she's around because I need to experience the throwdown live! 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

As she would say "BESTEST" thread on this page This video is another display of her spontaneity... Call me crazy, there's a mixture of a devil and an angel in that woman's wail She's SO out there, its impossible for her to fake an emotion. *SIGH!* I better stop

Dunno, Only that you feel it, and improvise in the moment...you're soloing with certain notes, the emotion hits you and you throw a little flourish, or dramatic gesture in there.... ... Supa, I know you'll like this one. I watched this last night and thought of your thread. Sure, Erykah doesn't have the best voice but I love her energy/vibe and she was definitely feeling it here and I love that about her. She goes into a zone at 5:39.
Oh and check out Millie Jackson's daughter on backing vox. [Edited 6/19/09 9:33am]

Oh and check out Millie Jackson's daughter on backing vox. THE. ZONE you don't have to lift one single fingernail in selling me on this property I love Erykah's voice. She might not be a Chaka but please, that don't mean shit when you're a Badu When Mama's Gun dropped I already was classing her as one of my all time favorites and when someone asked me about musical heroes I listed Erykah Badu and he said but she only has 2 albums. How can she be your hero already? You obviously haven't heard MAMA'S. GUN Oh yeah, I see Millie Jackson's daughter in the background! At that street fair I mentioned earlier, when I hit the stage that Millie was singin at, her daughter was out there warming up and helping the techs tune the mics and shit and I thought Goddamn, Millie Jackson hasn't aged AT. ALL!. Then I found out it was her daughter when the real Millie came on stage Ok, just saw your Millie Jackson reference on the quote but I'm still gonna include my discovery like I'm the only one who noticed 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I call it improvisation. That's what thrills me about live performances, even rappers.
