That was a very colorful story! Word was Neil and Bernard were trying to get in 54, which was NOTORIOUS for their door policy and their lack of compassion obviously, and they said they were guests for Grace Jones, the door man still wouldn't let them budge. So angry, they went to the bar, got a little drunk, returned to their apartment and Nile got his guitar and started screaming "AH...FUCK OFF!" while playing the riff. Bernard looked over and said "hey man let's write a song". The song was originally called "Freak Off" (as a protest record), Nile then alter the lyrics and renamed it "Freak Out" and gave a sly mention to Studio 54: "Just come on down to '54' Find a spot out on the floor Ah...FREAK OUT!" The rest is music history! yup I think they were hot on the charts with Dance Dance Dance (Yowsa Yowsa Yowsa) at the time.

And the biggest ironies of all ironies, not only were Chic allowed in 54 AFTER "Freak Out" hit, BUT that song was one of the most played songs at the club, also it made 54 even more popular with the mainstream at that time. I think people started singing songs talking about "going to Studio 54!" One song actually had this question: "can you get me into Studio?!" in a fast disco tone.

vainandy I was really young then, but I think most folks who saw these idiots blowing up records on tv thought they were stupid. Records were expensive back then and people bought carefully, so I'm not sure seeing so many destroyed helped their cause.
They blamed disco for screwing up rock, but alas rock had gotten VERY boring, pretentious, and couchlocked. If you weren't some teenaged boy living in the 'burbs...what was there for you? If they wanted to blame someone, blame the prog rockers and even the punks. Is there ANYONE more "repetitive" than The Ramones? By 1979, most of the biggest rock acts were winding down and what was left was dumbed down, repetitive, and SLOW (your fav music ) I almost never listen, few groups excepted, to rock made after 75. The rest is music history! A lot of folks say their door policy was discriminating but I loved the idea of it. The main folks that got in were the wildest and the freaks, the ones that normally would have been turned away at a lot of other places before Studio 54. Studio 54 made the freaks the the VIPs rather than the normal looking people. I remember one of the owners, Steve, in an interview saying he wanted just the right mix of black, white, straight, and gay as well as celebrities and the average Joe that worked at McDonald's. It definately would have made the inside of the club a lot more interesting than if you just let anyone in that could pay the admission. And it also made more people want to get in because they felt something above average about them if they should happen to get in. If you notice Chic's appearance back then, they all dressed really stylish but kinda in a conservative way also. I would have probably turned them away at the door too if I was the doorman if I had never heard of them. Andy is a four letter word.

It definately helped their cause because they changed the taste of the listeners by making them seem uncool if they liked disco. I know records were expensive so where did all these people get all these disco records to blow up? I'm sure those people didn't just go out to the record store and buy a bunch of disco records strictly to take to that event and blow them up. Not only would that have been a waste of their money, but they would have also been giving the very thing that they so-called hated a big boost in sales. They had those records in their collection because they had previously liked them before they had people messing with their head and convincing them to change their taste because "Disco Sucks" and nobody wants to be a part of something that sucks. I guarantee you, if we were to organize a similar "Shit Hop Sucks" event today, I wouldn't have any shit hop CDs to take to the event because I didn't buy any to begin with because I always hated it. They blamed disco for screwing up rock, but alas rock had gotten VERY boring, pretentious, and couchlocked. If you weren't some teenaged boy living in the 'burbs...what was there for you? Oh yes, they definately hated disco because it was outselling rock and they were scared that the death of rock would eventually occur if disco continued to exist. I can see a rock lover's point in that aspect of it because it's because of shit hop that no funk is around or can get any airplay. I loved some rock at that time as well as disco but both genres did exist at the same time. It's not the same with shit hop though. Shit hop exists and nothing else does. A rock lover may have worried that what's happening today would have happened back then. That is, if they were a true rock lover who was geniunely concerned that rock might become extinct. However, I think they were using that complaint as a front to hide their real hatred of disco which was racism and homophobia because rock did exist while disco was going on. , , , [Edited 6/17/09 22:53pm] Andy is a four letter word.

That was always the funny thing about it...where'd these shit load of lps come from? I suspect the records weren't even mostly disco titles, but freebies the station had collected over the years. People were so naive back then, but it's logical that this is where they came from. I bet relatively few people actually destoryed their own lps. If they hated them so badly, I bet they'd sell them to second hand shops. That stunt would have been so exposed today.
Gene Simmons used to ecourge people to destroy KISS albums and people were dumb enough to buy them and do it. The times were so different. The irony is that disco's demise simply helped bring the rise of hip hop.

Something happened not long after this that will give some context to it. In Dec (3rd, I think from memory) 1979, 11 people were trampled to death at the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati trying to get into a Who concert. This happened only a few months later, so it kind of puts into prospective what happened at Disco Sucks and why it surprised even the dj who started it. The rock crowd was very male, very stoned, and very stupid in those days. As I said, it was dumbed down to the max.

^^ Unfortunately, that's where rock has been relegated when it comes to gaining new fans. They used the reality show format, I suspect, to get in w/ younger fans (not to mention huge cash infusions for participating in the show) cuz they couldn't do it w/ just music alone. I think it worked a bit for Ozzy, but I'm doubtful on Gene.
The price paid by Ozzy's kids were probably not worth whatever career bump he got.
