Oh, Lawd! lol Now that reminds me of the scene in Mo Better Blues where Spike Lee says his mama whupped his brother's ass for putting a Betty and Veronica comic on their wall. lol

I came from Panama at the age of 7 the summer of 1980. Lots of music, even disco, was still playing on the radio. I remember Off the Wall staying on heavy rotation that summer. nod

You lucky mutha... lol

When I was 7, the radio was playing TLC, SWV, Kriss Kross, All For One,..and....you know who mad lol

Awwwww, poor Bboy. You and Rrrruhhh, ain't never gon' get along huh? comfort

1980 was another great year for music. I distinctly remember hearing John Lennon's music everywhere that year. nod

I never thought of The Stones' "Miss You" as disco, just a killer groove. Was it considered disco back then?

nod It was considered disco-ish.Compared to most of their other singles from the 70s,"Miss You" was a departure for them.It definitely had a funky beat. There was even an extended 12" version, which was rare for 'rock' singles.

This is my favorite by them. Can someone explain why Tavares also had a version on the soundtrack? That never made sense to me. hmmm

Here's my theory: the Tavares version is played when Tony and Stephanie are rehearsing their moves in a dance studio. The Bee Gees version is played during the actual dance contest.I think the director felt that the dance contest needed a more lush, sexier, slightly slower version of the song,to emphasize the chemistry between the two of them. The Tavares version is more uptempo and fun (which reflected the rehearsal scene) while the Bee Gees version is more "serious" and romantic, which reflected that scene.

Make any sense? lol That's my guess, anyway.

I think it's great that we have two excellent versions to enjoy. It's interesting to note that only the Tavares version was released as a single. Both versions received tremendous radio airplay, though.

...and there it is in a nutshell, Harlepolis. I was in college during those years, and I heard a lot of anti-gay, anti-black shit directed at the music.

Yup, because aside from the Bee Gees, how many disco acts were straight white dudes? They resented seeing Blacks and gays taking their places in their faces. Too damn bad! lol

Actually, quite a few straight white men hopped on-board...

Oddly, all these noteable examples are Brits...

woot! I distinctly remember my moms playing the hell outta George Benson and Luther and me singing Private Eyes and Your Kiss is on my List every morning while getting dressed for school. I also remember that when John Lennon was killed, the week before my 8th birthday, that they played Woman and Imagine for days. I think some stations just played Imagine over and over. sad
