SoulAlive said: Howard Hewitt really dogged Jody and Jeffrey I remember in 1983 when they left the group (shortly after "Dead Giveaway" became a big hit),he paraded the new member around (Micki Free) and the two of them held a highly publicized "audition" to replace Jody Watley. This was covered in magazines like Black Beat and Right On!.Worse of all,he filmed a video for "Over And Over" (the last single that featured Howard,Jody and Jeffrey) as a solo performance! It's as if he's saying "See? I don't need you losers".
Howard was acting as if Jody and Jeffrey were easily replaceable but karma has a way of catching up to people. The "new" Shalamar released the album 'Heartbreak' in 1984 and it bombed.Howard pursued a solo career, but Jody got the last laugh when her own solo album was released in 1987.It went platinum, had a whopping five hit singles, and won her a Grammy for Best New Artist. what in the hell is Micki Free wearing? I think Miki "passed" as Black or Latin back then, can't remember which. Before him, there was a Native guitarist named Jesse Ed Davis. Jesse Ed was quite the guy....huge guitarist, so I hav no idea why people didn't know Miki was Native.

People were more concerned about trying to figure out if he was a male or female after Howard Hewitt left the group, it wasn't Shalamar. Why did they still perform under the moniker? and did the later version of the group perform the older hits like Second Time Around and A Night To Remember when they had concerts? And that's what seems to be lost here based on some of the comments. Jody came in the game cocky as a solo artist. I remember comments she made while she was riding her wave as a solo artist when she stated notice that female artists like Janet and Paula Abdul can dance better than i can but i sing better. Everyone in the shalamar camp has their side of the story but i certainly don't think Jody was pure as the driven snow. Jody's solo career was a little more successful than Howard's but let's be real shalamar was just another group before howard took them to new heights. Jody's vocals blended in perfectly with howard's however. Don't laugh at my funk

Jody was pretty darn hot for a while there. I'd say by the time she released Dont You Want Me up until Friends and her permormance on the MTV Awards she was just as big as Janet or Paula or George Michael peaking around the summer of '88. I sorta remember her bringing the vogue thing to pop audiences before Madonna, and all the girls biting her tutu skirt and hoop earing style. To say she was more popular than Howard is a huge understatement.

I don't think she was being cocky she was telling the truth on that part! When she came out with "Its still a thrill" and "Im looking for a new love", I thought she had hung the moon! Jody was the shit back in the day. I don't think she aged well though. They were squabbling bad in the group. Jody told them she was moving overseas, and she said they thought she was going through a spell of PMS. The message you are about to hear are not meant for transmission. Yes, she did. Her image wasn't like Madonna or Janet's, she was thought of as a WOMAN...not girlish like the others. She was like a late 80s Diana Ross type...sexy, super fashionable, and a full grown woman. She was big stuff.

They had a short and turbulant marriage. It was rumored that he beat her. I don't know how this info got around, but that was the general belief about their relationship.

If she seems a little bitter,I can see where she is coming from. She was in the group from the beginning,Howard joins in 1979 and HE decides that he is the "leader" and that the other two are just "dancers" who can easily be replaced She has said that Howard behaved like a dictator, trying to control everything and not letting her have much imput. In 1983,there was a big showdown/argument where Jeffrey and Jody both decided to quit the group.According to Jody,Howard told her to her face "You won't make it as a solo act." She gleefully recalls that,"When I won the Grammy for Best New Artist of 1987,he didn't even call to congratulate me". The fact that she won't participate in a Shalamar reunion shows that she is still pissed about the whole situation.I'd love for them to call a truce and do a reunion, but they would have to work through alot of the bitter feelings.
