Mills spoke of not being asked out much or being asked to many dances when she was teenager: Pursuing a career in music made it difficult to meet guys and some were too intimated to step to her.
I think the Mill's famliy picked up on the fact Daniels knew Mills was very, very, vurnerable and he was marrying her for dubious reasons. Hell, I think everyone did! At the time Mr. Tom Joyer worked for the Johnson's (Ebony/Jet magazine) AM radio station, he and his sidekick (La Donna Tittle) just clowned on all the drama surronding Mills marriage to Daniels.
