Cool show...was shocked ya'll played my boyz Cameo's Insane. I dig the fuck out of that cut. The chorus is bangin'. And was digging Hot Chocolate's Mindless Boogie and Instant Funk's Darth Vader. I've had all of those since forever, along with the Silver Connection. [Edited 7/18/09 17:35pm] SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

[Edited 7/18/09 17:35pm] Convention NOTHING conventional about me saying that I was surprised that they played "Insane" by Cameo. What's conventional about that? Or me stating that I've had Hot Chocolate, The Silver Connection or Instant Funk since I was little. A brutha can't compliment somebody's show? SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. We got an interesting show coming up this Friday, July 24th. This time, the motto is Power to the People and we'll be playing Music from the Black Power Era, which we define as the era from 1967 until 1974 for this particular show.
We'll be playing music with messages of social awareness and which conveys the struggle for equality and eventually, Freedom. The music will be so good that you'll feel empowered after the show, no matter what race you are. This will be a deep show ... tune in live from 11pm until 1 am Eastern at www.wrir.org or get the download the next day.

What's going on, guys, you already writing a playlist for my show?
Some good choices up there, and many of them are on my list ... but as you probably know by now, I'll also pick some little known material. I'm surprised nobody mentioned James Brown (Say it Loud) I'm black and I'm proud and Get up, get into it, get involved.

Some may be inappropriate for the show but some powerful examples on the topic.
Donal Fox... ...River Town Packin' House Blues from Gone City. Although this album was released in 1997, the subject matter is right on point. Max Roach (w/Abbey Lincoln on vocals)... ...Freedom Day ...Driva' Man =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Within the timeline. Les McCann & Eddie Harris ...Compared To What (1969) Fela Kuti... ...Black Man's Cry (1971) Jim Ingram... ...Drumbeat (1974) Marlena Shaw... ...Woman of the Ghetto (1969) Oscar Brown Jr.... ...Some background on his connection to the subject matter and The Joneses (1974). tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Great picks, Neal. I picked up We insist a couple of years ago, it's an amazing record.
On this show, we'll stick a bit more to the Soul side of the Black Power sound .. I may do a show with music if the civil rights movement - ca. 1962 - 1968 - some other time. By the way, a nice interview with your Midnight Soulstice hosts in the latest edition of RVA Magazine in Richmond ... http://rvamag.com/article...-soulstice

I'm surprised nobody mentioned James Brown (Say it Loud) I'm black and I'm proud and Get up, get into it, get involved. Oh of course James's Say It Loud crossed my brain but I wasn't sure just how DEEP you wanted to get. Just like I didn't mention a cut from The Last Poets. That was one of the first songs I thought of when I saw the thread. Or a cut by Sly & the Family Stone. Along with Heron who was the first I had mentioned. Oh and here are a few that may NOT be seen as Black Power sentiments by others, but to me, lyrically and thematically, I very much see them as such: Jimi Hendrix: House Burning Down Funkadelic: Cosmic Slop (title track) Parliament: Fantasy Is Reality [Edited 7/23/09 14:42pm] SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz.
