Forgotten Gems...

Good Morning All!!

While in Florida, lastweek; I got a chance to listen to the radio. One of the songs that I heard was EW&F's, "Serpentine's Fire". I have not heard this song in YEARS!! I have grown accustomed to hearing "September" or their other played out hits. This got me to thinking, what are some of the other songs, by your favorite artists that you wish would get more play? I should mention that I heard "Serpentine Fire", on satellite radio...

Thought's anyone?

It's amazing the songs you hear when you're vacationing somewhere else.Several years ago,I was in Chicago and I found their R&B oldies station.I was surprised to hear Roy Ayer's "Freaky Deaky"!! They never play that jam in my area, lol. Some other forgotten gems that I wish would get more airplay....

***"Getaway" by Earth Wind and Fire---Sure,"September" and "Let's Groove" are great songs but I'd love to hear "Getaway" every once in a while!

***"Let's Work" by Prince

***"Too Hot Ta Trot" and "Flying High" by Commodores---Seriously,I could do without "Brick House" for awhile. That song is overplayed!! I'd rather hear those other two songs.

***"Clouds" by Chaka Khan---I pulled out the 'Naughty' album last week and I was wondering why I never hear this song on the radio anymore.

***"JoJo" by Boz Scaggs

***"Love Me" and "I'm Still Waiting" by Diana Ross---Her early 70s material is so underrated.Amazing singles that deserve so much more attention!

***"Outlaw" by War

***"Don't Let Go" by Isaac Hayes

This is exactly what I am talking about. It's funny that you mentioned, Diana. They also played "Last time I saw him" and "Love Hangover". These I have not heard in ages. Keep them coming guys, I know that Timmy, will chime in sooner or later...

A lot of stuff from Labelle could've saw airplay:

"Goin' on a Holiday"
"Last Dance"
"Can I Speak to You (Before You Go to Hollywood)"
"Moon Shadow"
"Morning Much Better"
"Get You Somebody New" and "Isn't It a Shame" should've been bigger hits
As such as "Messin' With My Mind"

Patti LaBelle's solo career in the late 1970s and early 1980s was pretty much maligned.

When more songs come up, I'll say something about them but that's what popped up in my mind, lol.

You sure name your thread right because I never heard Cissy's, but it very well could be. Labelle's song was about making love in the morning, was Cissy's the same? lol If not, then no. biggrin

Okay. My dad had this one Cissy album that I coverted to MP3, when I went to see him lastweek. It has a baning version of "Tomorrow". I also got, Grace Jones' "Le Vie En Rose"...He has all the jams.

Martha Reeves' "Love Blind" to me had "hit" written around it, why it wasn't a hit, I don't know why!

Mary Wells' "Gigolo" could've been a big pop hit if Epic had properly promoted it.

KBLX and Kiss FM are pretty limited. They've done the same "Featured Artists" weekends for the past 10 years:

Prince
Stevie Wonder
Marvin Gaye
Debarge
Michael Jackson and The Jacksons
Aretha Franklin

I really wish that KISS FM would add more 'rare' oldies to their playlist. They seem to concentrate only on the biggest hits from those artists you listed.I don't know why an oldies R&B station would limit themselves that way.

They need to take the oldie label off. I've heard too much Outkast, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Mary J, and Musiq on there

do you remember when every urban station was playing the hell out of Goapele's "Closer"?! mad

I can't even listen to that song now lol

Yeah, everytime they play a modern-day song (like Usher's "Yeah"),I immediately turn it off. It's a shame that us "Old School folks" can't have an oldies station that plays nothing but oldies.

Plus, now that Renel is gone, the station just ain't the same to me.I loved listening to her in the morning as I drove to work.

Yeah, just because they took out Ludacris' part doesn't make it better lol

and Renel's gone? wow

I'd rather listen to her than annoying ass Kevin Brown lol

You know, I used to say the same thing about wanting an oldies station. The problem with that is, this would be all you would hear. While there are some great classics out their, I would not wanna hear them 24/7. That's just me though.

I don''t mind hearing "new" R&B songs on these stations, just as long as it's genuine R&B songs...you know,R&B songs that don't sound like hip-hop.Usher's "Yeah" is exactly the type of R&B/shit hop crap I that despise. On the other hand,Robin Thicke's "Lost Without You" or Raphael Saadiq's "Never Gonna Give You Up" are superb modern-day R&B songs and these songs blend perfectly with classic stuff by Al Green and Marvin.

True. Although, Usher is not my cup of tea I like his song, "Here I Stand". I heard it here during a "Quite Storm", show and loved it.
