Well, there ya go...  For some reason this feels like a Don Corleone moment...somebody needs to slap D'Angelo a couple times and tell him, "You can act like a man."
Look, he's not the first artist/musician's/singer who did something against his or hers better judgment and later lived to regret it, you live, you learn, and move on. I suspect all this whining about not being taken seriously as an artist/musician's is a ruse for someone who got a lil' spooked about fame... that's understandable. | |

What makes him nasty is the way that he multi-tracks and then harmonizes his vocals, while throwing in all those vocal ad-libs. He's amazing in that regard - his back ground vocals are literally another instrument. He learned that vocal approach from listening to Prince and I think he does a better job at than Mr. Nelson.
Of course, harmonizing to your own multi-tracked vocals is very much a Marvin thang. 
However, hearing him live is another matter.
