I love NIN it's a shame these musicians do try to reach out to their fan base
Prince included, at the end of the day you can't because everyone is not in your corner or wishes you well.

yeah a human will mess up from time to time ... being there entails allowing someone to make mistakes, constructive criticism while moving in a forward direction.

musician/listener if you find yourself disengaged remove yourself listen to some one else.

so I get it.

We all see the world through slightly different filters, and no amount of moderation (or dictatorship) over content on any site will ever be able to change that in the long-term. You can't ban (or behead) the entire lowest-common-denominator; especially since the very definition will always remain in the eye of the beholder.

And it has always been as predictable as death and taxes that nothing or no one is universally loved or hated. But with the Internet we get this information almost instantly.

Yes, it's too bad that vile ignorance can not only find solace on the Internet, but sometimes parades with fanfare. But you either grow thicker skin or you find other, safer pursuits. wink

It's somewhat humorous that it took all this time and Twitter to make more celebrities feel like safer participates. But I think it’s just a matter of time before quite a few are chased off (or allow themselves to be chased off).

good comments clapping

it's been interesting for me to read reznor's complaints and frustrations while at the same time i've been working on the wendy & lisa interview project here on the .org and realizing just how involved W&L are with their fanbase online, and how comfortable they seem with it.

i don't think W&L possess any great quality that reznor lacks, though i do think they have the patience and temperament to push past the requisite internet bullshit and focus on the aspects of online social networking that will benefit them and the fans who are really there to enjoy the music and the artists. i also think it helps to have people working with you to filter out a lot of the nonsense, so as an artist you can stay focused on the relevant feedback from fans online, instead of having to wade through a bunch of "OMFG U SUCK LOLOLOL" rolleyes

i look at internet trolls as a kind of tax we have to pay to enjoy the immediacy and connection of the internet. nothing good comes for free, so the price we have to pay to have such an immediate forum of expression is that we have to wade through the idiots. they're the equivalent of pop up advertising banners. they're annoying, but you just click past them.

people take the trolls and the idiots far too seriously, and i wish they wouldn't. trolls will never go away. if you ban one, they'll come back under some new stupid name, or another moron will appear on the scene to take the place of the one that got banned yesterday. trying to eradicate idiots is like trying to eradicate idiocy. it can't be isolated and "cured" once and for all. the only way to combat them is to ignore them.
i deal with people all the time on the .org who have had their feelings hurt by some shmuckface who is just looking for attention so they decide to lash out at other users of this site. what these hurtful people need to realize is, it's not the negative behavior that gets attention in the long run. it's the positive behavior. the accomplishments. the involvement. THAT is how you get the kudos and the recognition. not by being an asshole.

but accomplishments take effort and being an asshole really doesn't, so.... shrug

Very well spoken. It does seem though, that they are breeding more rapidly than in the past (the Chastity Bono thread being just one example) so there is a lot of ignorable debris to sift through before reaching an enlightened thought. But, those thoughts are gems and worth the effort.
Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife. --Kahlil Gibran

Seems very stalkerish. Not a good idea for celebrities at all, letting folks know their every move.

I think after the successes of MySpace, YouTube and FaceBook, the owners of Twitter convinced some "celebrities" that THIS time they could be in on the ground floor of the next big thing and they jumped at the chance, hoping their celebrity status would help it grow, allowing them to cash in when and if Twitter goes public on the stock exchange or is bought out for billions.
