SISTER FUNK -Download for radio mix!! This Friday's edition of our radio show Midnight Soulstice, we'll dedicate to the female singers in Funk - and we'll present our first edition of Sister Funk!
We all know that especially in the 1960s, when Funk started, it was the female vocalists who had to put up with the most bullshit, trying to find a place next to the male singers who were the big stars (and who did not tolerate competition, especially from women!) So let's celebrate the Sisters in Funk. On this show, we'll play some of the greatest Funk songs by female singers. Some are known, some have been completely overlooked by music history. Tune in live this Friday, June 12th, from 11 pm until 1 am EST. Listen online at www.wrir.org Make friends with Midnight Soulstice at www.myspace.com/midnightsoulstice Here some examples of what you're gonna get to hear ... Ann Alford - Got to get me a job Tina Turner - Bold Soul Sister The Jackson Sisters - I believe in Miracles Marie Queenie Lyons - See and don't see Ann Peebles - It's your thing Marva Whitney - Unwind yourself Ann Sexton - You're losing me Lyn Collins - Think (About it) [Edited 6/12/09 19:52pm] [Edited 6/12/09 19:53pm] [Edited 6/12/09 21:51pm] [Edited 6/14/09 9:48am]

Sister Funk? Tina Turner? ....
Or do you mean Sisters of Funk as in Mallia Franklin, the Queen of Funk? Or Sisters of Funk as in the BRIDES? No pun, just sayin'... Thanks for the heads up! [Edited 6/11/09 8:48am]

Tina Turner has released some hard hittin' Funk when she was with Ike. Bold Soul Sister is one of my favorite Funk 45s.
I wasn't thinking so much of the Brides or Mallia Franklin ... that's waaay to synthezised and 80s for my taste. But more power to them ... you just won't get to hear that sound on my show. I'm gonna focus more on this sound ... or this .... or this ... and the other examples I posted above.

Gladys Knight Betty Davis Aretha Franklin! Of course there'll be some Betty. Aretha ... I don't know. She was really more of a Soul singer and never released much hard hittin' Funk. But Hey Now (The other side of the sky) is a pretty funky track.

How 'bout some Lalomie Washburn...
...My Love Is Hot, Double Funkin' & Try My Love =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Lalomie Washburn was a talented performer and songwriter and had the nickname 'Lomie'. She was signed to the Parachute label in 1977, where she released her first album, entitled 'My Music Is Hot'. For the next 20 years she wrote for and collaborated with several major soul acts including Rufus, Stevie Wonder, Paulinho Da Costa and Greg Phillinganes . Lalomie was also the featured vocalist with the group Hi Voltage during the Eighties. She was a featured vocalist on Quincy Jones's album 'The Dude' and appeared on Bridgette McWilliams' album 'Too Much Woman'. In 1992 she released several 12" single, on the Conscious Records imprint, with 'Try My Love' being particularly popular in the U.K. In 1994, she was a featured vocalist on Misty Oldland's album 'Supernatural'. In 1997, she released a second solo, self titled, album for the European Soulciety label. She also worked with Buddy Miles and the singer D.J. Rogers . Lalomie Washburn died on the 18th of September 2004. 'Lomie' had been living in the Los Angeles County. http://www.nebrocks.org/index.asp =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Probably too modern sounding. Knowing you, Try My Love would probably be the closest to your Funk aesthetic. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 [Edited 6/12/09 13:04pm] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
