Is this a good place to start with The Supremes?

So I picked up this 3 disc set last time I went shopping cause the price was incredible, but would you say this has most of their definitive songs on it?

I've really been wanting to hear more of their music since hearing a mixtape with a couple songs from them on it that I didn't recognize

Here's what I got...

http://www.amazon.com/Pla...B0016CP1RI

If you will, so will I

Any compilation is good, you hardly see '60s studio albums by any Motown act at any store but they always have a compilation or two on them though so this looks juicy since it's got more of their post-Flo work besides "Love Child" and "Someday We'll Be Together".

Yeah, I'd say you did quite good, esp if the price was very good. biggrin It doesn't have Flo's lead on "Buttered Popcorn" but you can probably find that as a single mp3 somewhere.

I have both of those albums and used to rock them out when I was a kid. I always wanted the H-D-H one. Great stuff. I always wondered how the Liverpool stuff sounded? Berry was a trip.

Timmy...have you ever seen GIT or TCB? I could never get my hands on either, but heard GIT was the ultimate in cheese.

I'd say the boxed set or the Gold collection, but the on you mentioned is a good "hits" compilation.

eek SIX albums in 1965 alone? Damn they worked artists back then! I can't imagine a modern artist having 2 full albums released in one year, let alone 6.

Imagine if they'd been around in the reggae era..."Supremes Sing Marley, Buring Spear, and Cliff" or the hip hop era "Supremes Rap H-D-H", "Supremes Sing 50 Cent" and the list goes on. That Berry fryingpan They're just lucky there was no such thing as the net. They'd be toast.

Yeah, Motown worked the hell out of their artists. That's why you have so many different alternate versions as well as unreleased tracks.

WTF!!! They actually had an album called the supremes
sing country, western, pop. I wonder how well that went
over. lol

Anyway Reflections and Love Child were very good albums
My mom had both of those.
And post diana floy joy was my joint. Never heard the
album but loved the single even though it wasn't one
of their well known hits. I actually believe solange
got the idea for the melody I decided from Floy Joy.
Don't laugh at my funk

Word was that since the Ray Charles country sets went well, they figured the Supremes could benefit from it since they had started to get big hits.

Good estimates.

According to this site (just counting the 60s & 70s, not including reissues): http://www.funky-stuff.co.../disco.htm

60s: 37
70s: 28

That's 65 albums in a 20 year span!

And even more odd was when Marvin started he wanted to be a jazz singer, Motown insisted he do R&B yet they still allowed him to do jazz albums until it was obvious where the money flew. Even more odder he pushed the jazz/Broadway stuff on the Supremes after they got popular with the mainstream.
