That one is some wild shit and a bit of a departure from their usual straight ahead JB's-like grooves. Makes me think that if Sun Ra was born 40 years later and was still playing this is what he might sound like.

Couldn't get that seriously into it, but it's good enough stuff to get a thumbs up reaction. The instrumentation is good.

The vocals sort of destroy it on some of the songs. I am somewhat used to listening to japanese vocalists on funk / soul / disco -type music, but here they just don't work due to the bad pronunciation. When he goes into those JB -screams it sounds like something else emanates from inside him, it's just a weird contrast. Sounds quite forced.

I'm willing to give the same criticism for a funk-based artist from my own country that I've been sort of digging along the years, Jimi Tenor.

^ Nothing is forced here. Band leader Ryo Nakata is possibly the greatest James Brown fan I've ever met. He has been a fan for 20 years, and he has run Osaka Monaurail for almost as long. These cats are the hardest working band I have ever seen. I'm talking 30 rehearsal hours every week, six albums (one with James Brown's Soulsister Number One, Marva Whitney) and a dozen singles. The band is a well-oiled machine, and I have not seen a tighter Funk unit in my life (the Dap-Kings - maybe).

I've seen musicians of the James Brown Band stand in the wings of a Osaka Monaurail show, rubbing their eyes and ears in disbelief. When these guys hit the stage, it's intimidating. In fact, their records don't do their live shows justice - which is why in recent years, Monaurail has become the most popular New Funk act in Europe, doing more dates than any other new Funk bands. Even in countries like Spain, almost thousands people line up to see their shows.

We're currently working on bringing Osaka Monaurail to the U.S. for the first time in 2010 - and it's looking good.

Here some live clips:

Two great clips from Madrid, which show how Monaurail stop traffic and have lines around the block like JB at the Apollo Theater.

Oh, and they can play the Blues, too ...

And, of course, with Marva Whitney ...

Thanks for this thread, Finess! biggrin

We've found a way to work with the Japanese embassy. Bringing them here is the biggest problem, as it is costly. But I've got some much interest here in the U.S. for Osaka Monaurail, we could possibly perform in more than 15 cities in the U.S. and Canada.

You already know about this because I gave you a copy of this particular album - Last year, we did a comauflage album - Osaka Monaurail recorded under the name Undercover Express. The entire album is all covers of Funk instrumentals from the 1960s and early 1970s. It's a super tight record.

I was released in Europe as Amen, Brother! by Osaka Monaurail.

Here's a clip with a few tracks - I think it's their best record to date.
