I usually don't start threads and I was going to send this to my buddy Soul Alive (as a personal email) since we favor the same ol' school 1970's R&B and musical movies. But I figured there's probably 1 or 2 others that might be interested in reading this too. Read this today in the NY Daily News:

"Simon Cowell's career is 'staying alive' thanks to a new movie project. The "American Idol" judge is on the verge of nailing a deal for the big-screen remake of the classic movie "Saturday Night Fever". He's enlisting an unlikely team: Timbaland will be overseeing the film's soundtrack, and Zac Efron is in talks to play the lead".


.....now Soul and I (both huge S.N.F fans) have talked for years on the org. of how this movie should have been remade. Soul even had a great sequel idea that probably would have been a better film than the 1980's "Staying Alive" movie.

I'm sorry, but this remake has DUD written all over it. Trying to remake this movie would be like trying to remake "Rocky", "Star Wars", and (do I dare even say it?).."Purple Rain". "SNF" was a perfect example of the 1970's counterculture and I don't see anything big in music today that was as hot as disco was 30 years ago.

Sure there's club, techno, electronica and hip-hop of course, but let's get real..the original sountrack is classic.

If it gets redone, hopefully it won't have the "High School Musical" movie teenage gloss factor written all over it...we'll see.

And on a similar note (speaking of Travolta and 1970 film remakes)..The remake of "Pelham" with Denzel was fantastic!

Some movies should never be remade especially movies that include music. How in the hell are you supposed to update a movie full uptempo disco jams for the dancefloor in an era of slow to midtempo shit hop that is slow enough for a fucking nursing home? It simply can't be done unless you remake the acting in the movie and keep the original music from the original movie.

Oh, and as for Simon Cowell, he needs to stick his dorky ass where he belongs with a bunch of dull ass Shitney Houston/Celine Dion up and coming wannabes and stay the hell away from anything related to disco, funk, rock, or anything that jams.

If this is made - God forbid it - I hope it tanks HARD. And I hope it's a hell of an embarassment to Simon Cowell and Timbaland as well. Too bad Justin Timberlake wasn't mentioned.

How would I remake Saturday Night Fever? Well, first of all, I'd set it in a disco...no wait, techno club, and...um...forget it! There's no way they could remake this movie because it was very much a product of the culture at the time. The whole movie was a time capsule about being a working class stud in the midst of the disco era in New York City, and there's no way to recreate that scene, even if they tried to remake it as a historical film. Likewise, there's no way they could remake The Graduate, Easy Rider, Purple Rain, The Breakfast Club, Boyz N The Hood, or Reality Bites. I thought remaking Footloose was a bad idea, though it appears that it will be based more on the Broadway production and not the original movie.

I'll be honest, I didn't really like that movie much. Kinda depressing. Excellent music though.

Lord no, tell this isn't true. You cannot recreate the magic that is Saturday Night Fever. As was mentioned previously in this thread, it is a product of its time and I don't think it can be successfully updated for the new millenium.

Why can't Hollywood just leave well enough alone?

..glad to see ohers feel the same way I do. If Simon wants to make a 70's era dance film, fine. If he wants to get a 70's style dance band, cool..(Jamiroquai and Under The from Sweden come to my mind)..just don't call it "S.N.F.".


..Also on the horizon soon..the remakes of "Flashdance" and "My Bodyguard".
