This might be a silly question but....didn't this guy retire a few years back? WTF?

Never been a fan and never will.

Like 6 years ago he knew he would be taking a break and wasn't sure if he was coming back. Then 2 and a half years ago he released his second last album.

I'm guessing you're a "fan" of his? You seem to be giving him a lot of passes when it comes to calling him on his ish. Now, mind you, i'm not a fan of his and I could care less about him, but when he "retired", he retired. None of this "he knew he would be taking a break" ish.

Here's something from Hecklerspray:

"Remember Jay-Z's last album, The Black Album? Of course you do, it only came out about quarter of an hour ago. Anyway, all through The Black Album, Jay-Z kept yakking on about how it was going to be his last album, and how he was going to retire from rapping to let young pups like Kevin Federline take over. And now, in probably the least surprising news you'll ever read, Jay-Z has ended his retirement and will be releasing a new album Kingdom Come in the autumn. And Chris Martin is on it. Chris Martin from Coldplay. What are the chances that we can convince Jay-Z that retirement is actually pretty cool?

For all his relentless boasting and swagger, we never really got the impression that retirement was going to be Jay-Z's thing. Sure, he did spend every single track on The Black Album telling us a million times that he really was retiring forever, honest, but after a few weeks of knocking about at home sucking on Murray Mints with Beyonce getting under his feet, Jay-Z was never going to stay retired long. And that explains Kingdom Come, the forthcoming Jay-Z album. Jay-Z told Entertainment Weekly:

"It was the worst retirement, maybe, in history. I believed it, yeah. I believed it for two years. Something, when you love it, is always tugging at you and itching at you, and I was putting it off and putting it off. I started fumbling around to see if it felt good.""

Oh, and as for his songs not having "melodies"...

Wouldn't the chorus from Annie's "It's A Hard Knock Life" be considered a "melody"? Or the sample from Oliver?

Maybe "melody" has a different definition in the Hip-Hop universe...?
• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

nod yes...we're all idiots...

lol

well that or...(considering the context of the song) jay z suggested his raps have no melodies in an attempt to present himself as an anti-melody figure (melody being what autotune users are using autotune for)

as for his "retirement" anyone who didnt know that was a publicity stunt.....

well, i have no finish for that sentence... i knew it was a stunt to begin with. and i commend him for it, because it worked in his favor

I thought he has already, on the latest album?

not that this has anything to do with the initial thread anyway... redface boxed

i should edit this: i don't mean the autotune but some kind of technology that makes his voice sound similar to t-pain
shrug

then again, WTF do i know, i don't live on this forum lol
[Edited 6/8/09 16:06pm]

No LOL, I meant like how Prince embraced rap after dissing it a few years previous on "dead on it", Jay Z might do the same and probably use this autotune method in a few years to get hits, despite his dilike of it at the moment.

he already did..not for a whole verse tho

(thats why i suggested in the vid that his choice of stance in this song, was more marketing ploy than personal conviction)

Some of these cats could not have songs without autotune - cuz they can't sing! Seems to me like he was talking mostly about Kanye West, The Dream and T-Pain.

Sah ril - I like you man - and I appreciate your thoughtfulness and enthusiasm for music. ...I believe some folks could also be confused when you said Roger Zapp Troutman. If I'm not mistaken Roger's brother Terry was nicknamed "Zapp" Troutman. "Roger" Troutman was the lead voice in the band Zapp.

Check out this video of Terry "Zapp" Troutman http://www.youtube.com/wa...ee0j-61ecU

my prediction is that jay z's new song won't do very well although i like it, and therefore - a response or diss track won't get much attention

you make some interesting points in part 2

don't you think prince really oughta embrace the internet more? i mean i feel that if he doesn't - he is just gonna have to rely on doing a hits tour when he is 80 to make money

honestly? prince should be blogging imo....and it dont even require much, just for him to type a few words about how he feels every other day. maybe even a few free downloads followed by a strategic release with a price tag...either way, he really should be capitalizing off the closeness his fans feel to him, but i know he's too private for that

Damn Sah, your room is dirty! I ain't never comin' over to play Playstation! lol

but foreal, I totally get what you're saying. Hov's new song is getting ALOT of positive feedback, especially from hardcore and longtime hip hop fans. Checking out sites like Okayplayer and All Hip Hop, people have been saying the same thing since T-Pain really blew up in 2006 or 2007: It was cool for a couple of songs, but it's become overkill.

Oh yeah, T Pain walked on stage at Summer Jam this year during Jay's performance of the song and Hov gave him a WTF look lol
