Sowhat said: SoulAlive said: Yes,Rick belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.'Street Songs' is one of the most important funk albums of the 80s.Rick was definitely a funk pioneer and he remained loyal to the funk.Songs like "Mary Jane","Give It To Me Baby",and "SuperFreak" are undisputable punk funk classics. In the early 80s,he helped to rejuvenate the careers of his Motown labelmates the Temptations ("Standing On The Top") and Smokey Robinson ("Ebony Eyes"),helped Teena Marie gain funk credibility and had much success with the Mary Jane Girls.Hell,he even made the non-singing Eddie Murphy sound decent on "Party All The Time",lol.MC Hammer's biggest hit single ("U Can't Touch This") was based on a Rick James sample.
Yeah Rick James almost single handedly breathed new life into Motown. That along with his late 70's early to mid 80's albums, fine work with his protégés and career defining album "Street Songs" should be enough to get him in!!! This is truff. Mid-late 70s Motown was dying on the vine. Teena Marie was neglected and hardly no new artists were emerging. Rick and crew along w/ Switch/De Barge were pretty much it after about 78 or so.

woogiebear said: Rick James ALSO SINGLEHANDEDLY took on MTV in the early days for not playing "enough" R&B. He took them to task, saying that there's MORE than just MJ & P. He told them if they weren't gonna play HIM, well at least play someone else's videos!!!!
So for THAT reason AND Street Songs, he MORE THAN DESERVES to be in the RRHOF!!!! p.s.: Oh yeah- he also gave a young upstart from Mpls. his start on the big road, even though they turned out to be musical rivals..... Well there was Grace Jones and David Bowie in the mix too, but Rick was early on calling them out. He and Grace actually did it together. LOL...those two were more rock than MJ could ever hope to be, yet igged. Then David brought the pain while be was being interviewed on MTv...so Rick had some help!

Rick definitely deserves to be in there, I agree with Andy, he should've been inducted the same year as Prince; but it seems like the industry just refuses to give Rick the credit he deserves.
We should all storm the streets with torches and pitchforks until they let him in... Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!
