Patti Labelle and Michael Bolton Haters gonna hate LOL, but Michael held his own against a live legend like Patti back then. Patti still owns, but Bolton gets props on this performance to. What do you think? [Edited 6/17/09 15:20pm]

Surprised they didn't do their duet "We're not making love anymore" actually.

I think I saw this performance as a kid and I think that even though Michael held his own, Patti still took him to school. Call her a shouter but I love the way she does it.

Do you know if this was before or after that awful isley Brothers court case? I know any few black/rnb fans he had, vanished after that debacle.

OK, I just checked to see what the description was and it was 1990 ("Motown Live") when this was taped.

Before the "scandel" then. "Love is a wonderful thing" (the song that got sued) came out in 1991. Never did like that song much, and Iam a big fan.

I remember thinking that in 1991 at 7 and I was just starting to understand what was a Motown song and what was not!

Iam surprised it was as big a hit as it was. Bolton can do rnb/soul, but its very hit and miss. "Soul provider" is decent enough, even "sittin' on the dock of the bay", I think gets a pass, but he kept doing rnb covers/standards and it was abit of a waste really. "When a man loves a woman" is god awful fo example.

Bolton pushed it, but he did find his niche later on in his career when he realized he was a pop crooner and not a soul man.

- So which Michael did those rnb remakes that I can't stand? Not only "When a Man Loves a Woman" but "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" and so on and so on? McDonald right?
- There's only one station in my area that plays his remakes and its not the "rnb" ones [Edited 6/17/09 16:48pm]

I love some Michael Mcdonald, he sounds like James Ingram (or Joe Pizziulo, Joe "bean" Esposito) etc.. and I think he even pre-dates Ingram (though Ingram has the better voice in my opinion), but Bolton's voice is kinda unique. Love him or hate him, he can do pop, rock, ballads, rnb etc... dude can be versitle and has great range too. I liked the song he wrote with Babyface called "best of love", but it flopped

I never heard the song Michael (and Walter Affansief) supposedly stole, but Michael stupidly said he never heard that song in question before, despite being known for loving soul music. Its possible he never heard it, but very unlikely. He lost the case.

Apparently it was a song the Isleys wrote that Motown published though the Isleys had recorded it in a different label.

Sounds quite obscure to be fair to Mike. I'd still like to hear it. Anyway, I read Teddy Riley is a big fan of Mike's? Who knew?

I've heard so many hip-hop heads admit they even have a Johnny Mathis or Johnny Cash CD in their case, lol.

It ain't all "danger zone" and "footloose", as Iam sure you know. I know Babyface is a big fan of Phil Collins. Infact, some rnb stars did a tribute album to Phil. I remember Brandy and Ray J releasing "another day in paradise".
