Mariah's new movie "Tennessee" opening in limited release today

Mariah Carey's new movie, Tennessee, is being released in theaters today. However, it's a really limited release (15 theaters total), so you probably won't see it in your area unless you live in NY, LA or Chicago.

People need to remember that THIS movie is why Janet Jackson had put on a lot of weight on purpose just before Discipline came out. She mentioned this movie over a year ago and how she had put on weight for the role. But with scheduling for the album and the movie, she had to leave the role, and Mariah took over. She of course shed the weight rather quickly before the release of her album.

^^^ Yes, I remember that. It would have been interesting to see how it turned out with Janet. Guess we'll see her again in the Perry sequel.

I'm guessing, given the "travel" storyline, it also would have bore a resemblance (whether good or bad) to "Poetic Justice."

It's playing in Tennessee, so I hope to see it tomorrow.

Mariah has been busy this is her second movie this year so far. If you do see it ThreadBare, would you mind giving a review? I would love to hear what it is about.

Consider it done, ma'am. In the meantime, here's what the NY Times said.

Given her yo-yo weight, it's hard to see how a movie about a waitress would need her to pack on the pounds. You know, weight-shedding is part of her pre-album m.o.

You'd have to ask Janet. Everyone around her, including those involved w/ the movie, have stated what I mentioned.

Janet's a fat girl trying to live in a skinny girl's body. Has been for years. Everyone around her, including industry folks, know how they're supposed to address her weight issues.

My review: (Beware, ye who care, of the spoilers that be lurkin' in me review... Arrrgh. :pirate: I'll try to keep 'em to a minimum.)

"Tennessee" might be Mariah's new movie, but it's not really a movie about her character. The movie traces the path of two brothers from New Mexico back to their native Tennessee and to the father who abused them. Mariah's character, Krystal, a Texas waitress in an abusive marriage, befriends them and finds enough strength through their issue-laden journey to believe again in herself and in her dream, which (surprise, surprise) involves writing and performing music. Lance Reddick (of "Heroes" fame) does an OK job as her husband, Frank. He's not given much to do with beyond play one of the movie's abusive villains. The final scene involving him is extremely anti-climatic.

It's an indie-style, character-driven deal. It expects its viewers to get the nuances as they waft from the screen. There are no heavy-handed scenes. It has issues with pacing, but the end redeems that middle sluggishness. Could it have been more cohesive? Yes, but Mariah does an OK job playing mother hen to the two brothers.

The movie is really about their unbelievable love for each other. That storyline gets you in the end.
