Reprise set to release Neil Young Archives Vol.1 Neil Young Archives project launches June 2
May 28, 2009 by Goldmine Staff Reprise Records will release Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 1963-1972 in three different formats June 2: Blu-ray, DVD and CD. The Blu-ray edition uses an interactive platform with music, video and text, and allows for material to be added later via the internet. Pre-orders at www.neilyoung.com will include a free preview version (called Disc 0) to be sent out before the June 2 release date, along with an exclusive 7" single of the early songs “Aurora” and “Mustang.” The Blu-Ray and DVD Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 1963-1972 box sets contain ten discs that span the first decade of the artist’s career, starting with his high-school band the Squires and moving all the way to the unreleased film “Journey Through The Past.” Included in these years are previously unreleased songs, outtakes and live tracks from Young’s various groups, including Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Crazy Horse. Blu-ray audio is presented in ultra-high resolution 24-bit/192 kHz stereo PCM state-of-the-art master quality sound. Audio in the DVD edition includes ten discs presented in high resolution 24-bit/96 kHz PCM audiophile-quality sound. The CD edition is eight discs presented in standard resolution 16-bit/44 kHz stereo PCM CD quality sound. An interactive timeline feature allows the viewer to follow the entire life of the singer-songwriter, and presents never-before-seen memorabilia, handwritten lyrics, letters and other historical documents that add up to Young’s life story. The Blu-ray and DVD editions are packaged in a durable display box that also houses a 236-page full-color hardbound book that features additional archival materials, a tapes database and detailed descriptions of the music and artwork, a foldout Archives poster, a custom keeper for the 10 sleeved discs and more. The Blu-ray and DVD editions are priced at $299.99 and $199.99, respectively. The CD edition is sold in a custom disc keeper for the 8 sleeved discs and a descriptive booklet and is priced at $99.99. I took a look at the track list, and there's no material from the Mynah Birds, Neil & Rick James' R&B/Garage band . I guess Neil couldn't get the rights from Motown? [Edited 6/2/09 16:04pm] | |

I couldn't really afford the DVD or Blue Ray version right now, but I did pick up the CD box set yesterday, and the sound is fantastic.
Some of the unreleased tracks and performances are really amazing to hear. The next set should be incredible, it will cover my favorite era in Neil's music (albums like On the Beach, Tonight's The Night, Zuma...) * * *
