NME News
Michael Jackson 'angry' at 50 London shows being booked

Michael Jackson has announced that he will play ten gigs at the London O2 Arena in July – and hinted he would retire from performing. The ten shows, which boast the tagline "This Is It", will commence on July 8, with tickets going on sale on March 13 at 7am (GMT). Pic: PA Photos

Michael Jackson has announced that he will play ten gigs at the London O2 Arena in July – and hinted he would...

Singer speaks out about O2 Arena residency

Michael Jackson has hit out at his London O2 Arena gig bookers, saying he believed he only signed up to play 10 shows - not the 50 he is scheduled for - at the venue.

Speaking to fans outside the Los Angeles dance studio where he's rehearsing for the gigs, the singer admitted that he might not be physically well enough to complete all 50 shows, reports The Sun.

"I don't know how I'm going to do 50 shows," he said of the gigs, which kick off in July. "I'm not a big eater - I need to put some weight on."

The star then laid into the gig promoters, saying he only wanted to play ten shows at the O2 Arena.

"I'm really angry with them booking me up to do 50 shows," he said. "I only wanted to do ten, and take the tour around the world to other cities, not 50 in one place.

"I went to bed knowing I sold 10 dates, and woke up to the news I was booked to do 50."

Michael Jackson has already postponed the start of the residency from July 8 to July 13 citing production issues.

Michael Jackson's 50 gig fury

MICHAEL JACKSON has told fans he is fuming with concert promoters for booking 50 shows in London.

The Thriller star told fans outside his LA dance studio he wanted to take his live extravaganza across the globe - and only perform a handful of gigs at the O2.

But he didn't get his wish, and a deal was struck for Jacko's monster 50-date residency after the initial block of 10 he'd agreed to sold out.

He claims he only learned of the extra 40 bookings when he awoke to the news one morning.

The ailing King Of Pop is now panicking he's not physically strong enough to cope with the gruelling schedule, insisting his small appetite makes it hard for him to perform.

After practicing his moves at the Burbank Studios, Jacko, 50, greeted devoted fans waiting outside - and blew off some steam in the process.

He said: "Thank you for your love and support, I want you guys to know I love you very much.

"I don't know how I'm going to do 50 shows. I'm not a big eater - I need to put some weight on.

"I'm really angry with them booking me up to do 50 shows. I only wanted to do 10, and take the tour around the world to other cities, not 50 in one place.

"I went to bed knowing I sold 10 dates, and woke up to the news I was booked to do 50."

Last month, Jacko had 80,000 fans up in arms after the opening dates of his residency were delayed.

The concerts were due to kick off on July 8 but the opening night has been pushed back five days, with the others now scheduled for March.

Last week it emerged Jackson may have to axe more dates as he continues his battle with skin cancer.

Michael Jackson has told his fans that he is not happy to have been booked to play 50 dates at London's O2, it has been claimed.

According to The Sun, the 'Bad' singer met with fans outside Burbank Studios in Los Angeles and told them that he would rather have performed a world tour instead of his planned residency.

Jackson reportedly said: "Thank you for your love and support, I want you guys to know I love you very much.

"I don't know how I'm going to do 50 shows. I'm not a big eater - I need to put some weight on."

He added: "I'm really angry with them booking me up to do 50 shows. I only wanted to do 10, and take the tour around the world to other cities, not 50 in one place.

"I went to bed knowing I sold 10 dates, and woke up to the news I was booked to do 50."

Jackson recently postponed the first four dates of his London residency amid claims that he is not prepared for the concerts.

I find it utterly ridiculous to comment on those silly things, there are pretty much more important things in life other than criticizing someone for a fucking T-shirt, Its a fucking T-shirt for god's sake, I don't mind if you criticize as you always do of course, but there are times to do so, I find your joke really childish , silly and most of all .."tired"

So you're seriously suggesting people over a certain age can't sing? What age would that be?

Prince is 50 too, ya know. And I'm sure there are at least a few other people on the planet who can sing quite well at 50 and older.

michael jackson is the "king of pop", pop music is disposable, but commercial and popular, just like tabloid newspapers, the only newspapers to give any column space to MJ apart from during his child abuse cases. the "proper" newspapers and critics don't give two fucks about him as he hasn't released anything in almost a decade, and toured in longer. MJ and tabloids go hand in hand, it's the prefect marriage

leno thanked MJ on his final night as his stories make great comedy. the world laughs at him. you need to consider your perspective on things, we can all take the piss out of prince and laugh at him on his own fan forum, everyone else is also fair game. if you can't have a laugh at michael jackson and all the ridiculous things he does, and all the stories written about him, then maybe you have some issues you should reflect on

Even tho this is coming from a British tabloid, I do kind of wonder if he actually said that--I find it hard to believe that he would actually tell his fans something like that, but with Michael you never know. The fact that this time they are actually quoting his (alleged) words over their usual tired and dubious "a source said" makes me wonder too---If they are totally making this up Michael should definitely do something about this story and speak out against it. Heck, he should probably speak out against it even if it is true because right now I'm seeing all kinds of headlines: "Michael Unsure if he can Perform..." "Michael Too Thin to Perform all 50 O2 shows", "Michael Too Skinny to Moonwalk" and so on... confused

I always get the impression that Michael is being forced to do this whole tour, b/c he has to take care of certain financial matters that have no way of getting fixed unless, he goes on tour and makes money.

At the same, he wants to show his children what Michael Jackson was all about back in the day.
