Mary J. ft. Lil' Kim - I Can Love You (1997)

This song brings back some fucking memories much like Ladies' Night:

RIP the cuter Lil' Kim and the rougher-than-fuck MJB. sad lol

- I used to jam to this joint; I was never too thrilled w/ rap appearances on such songs but Kim's rap is bearable

Yeah I remember me and my nephew Juan jamming to this. Both of us would always repeat that line Lil' Kim rapped when she said "who you lovin', who you wanna be huggin', dippin' on your Ninja Honda with Tanisha and Rhonda, WHAT!" Of course we had a hard time understanding what the fuck she was saying at the time. lol

I like the album too. I'm in love with that title track actually, lol. If you noticed, she interpolated a bit from DeBarge's song of the same name near the finale.

Marvin & Tammi never did "You Are Everything" (the song you're probably referring to in "Everything"). Marvin did the song only in the studio and Diana Ross filled in the duet spot (since they recorded separately) for their duet album. As far as I know, THEIR version hasn't been sampled. She also, or should I say, Jimmy & Terry, sampled James Brown's "The Payback" (beats and bass riffs only) and she vocally interpolated A Taste of Honey's version of "Sukiyaki" in her verses (she about stole it, lol!)

Player's Anthem, One More Chance, No Time, America's Most Wanted, California Love, How Do You Want It, One in a Million, Are You That Somebody, Lady (Remix), Get Money, the list is endless . . . mushy

I worked in clubs during this time and if the DJ played any of these songs it would get KRUNK, everybody going to the next level. The funny thing is that as old as these songs are when they get played in the club TODAY everyone STILL gets excited. Club/hip-hop music today SUCKS! pout

yeah the 90's were a really good time for r&b/hip hop, and I liked almost everything I heard, though I'm certainly not like that anymore and more picky.

1995 was probably one of the most exciting years for r&b/pop music

'95 was when it started but the summer of '96 before Tupac got shot in September was RIDICULOUS!!! So much FUN! Then Biggie got killed 6 months later and the whole tone of hip hop changed after that. sigh

Yeah that was just sad. sad And the fact it happened six months apart. I tried to embrace hip-hop the way it was but it became harder to do that even as I blasted Missy and Timbaland, lol. I think I played that damn Up Jumped the Boogie album (or was the title Welcome 2 the World by Tim and Magoo?) like 70 times, and Aaliyah's One in a Million more than 100. Both of them scratched the fuck up. lol

It's bound to happen sooner or later and I'll have this " neutral " look on my face. lol And they be the SAME ones saying "man you like this old junk?" Next minute these fools will be singing as if they knew the lyrics and then I'd be like "oh I'm old huh but you're singing too!" lol
