standing in the shadows of the funk brothers

OK-Saturdat night i had one of those rare moments-like the time I first saw Purple Rain....something musical moved me big time-these days -man thats getting a rarity. The thing in question was a documentart called Storyville-Standing in the shadow of The Funk Brothers. AMAZING show.brilliant music-musicians-stories.Joan Osbourne is truly superb when she joins them for a groove or two. Just simply-a must see for anyone remotely into music.Real feel good stuff. Im sooooo glad i stayed in to see it

PS-I had kind-a heard of em' before this show-I just never realised they were on as much of the good stuff as they are. Now they're easily my second fave band ever-after the Revolution-and they are a close second. Amazing people.

biggrin I agree, great documentary on the legendary Funk Brothers!

Actually, the title originally sprang from this book, a combination Biography/instructional booklet and tape set(later book and CD) on the life and bass work of the late Motown Bassist James Jamerson....

Btw, isn't it sad that they were so uncelebrated ...even at Motown....Jamerson watched the famous Motown 25 special from his TV at home....

Fantastic doc....a must see for all who love music. How the Funk Brothers were treated clouds my view of Motown, I must admit. It just pisses me off that Berry sat on his most prized asset of the Detroit years and did so willfully. The Funk Brothers were solid gold, but Berry ignored the warning signs. The future was pointing to instrumentalists taking center stage and he had the best of the lot. Did he somehow miss "Green Onions" and the success of Booker T and the MGs? Hendrix, EC, Beck, etc?

Jamerson and Papa Zita were one of the best bass-drums combos ever, but they never even got the props for it when they were alive, not to mention the money. What a shame...what a waste.

I gotta get that DVD again, when I tried playing it on my laptop, the computer acted slow to it. So I'm gonna get it again (if I can) and see if it can play on my Playstation2. lol

Good movie tho. The Funk Brothers (as they were named around 1966) were great.
