Keep thinking, because "Beat It" is not a Donna Summer type song. Not even if you pull out "Bad Girls" or "Hot Stuff" next to it.
These people are not wannabes. They're people with their own style of music. Donna Summer didn't invent dance music, or disco music. She certainly had her place in the niche though. Irene Cara's song was firmly planted in the 80's with any other 80's pop song with a dance edge.

I don't think any of these ladies are "wannabees",but some of their songs were Donna-inspired.It's often been said that "Love Hangover" was inspired by "Love To Love You Baby".Laura Branigan's voice is reminiscent of Donna's at times, especially on her 1984 hit single "Self Control".Irene Cara actually worked with Donna's producer Giorgio Moroder on the song "What A Feeling" and later on an entire album. At the time, many people were saying that Irene was "the new Donna Summer".Madonna's recent electronica music is obviously inspired by the groundbreaking sounds of Giorgio Moroder in the 70s ("Future Lovers" is a homage to Moroder). Michael Jackson? The only connection I can think of is...in 1982,Donna Summer released an album produced by Quincy Jones. It features a loud rock song called "Protection" with a blazing guitar solo by a legendary rocker (Bruce Springsteen, who also wrote the song). Later in 1982,Michael Jackson released an album produced by Quincy Jones. It features a loud rock song called "Beat It" with a blazing guitar solo by a legendary rocker (Eddie Van Halen).

How about "Love Is Just A Breath Away" also from the Quincy Jones "Donna Summer". Very similar musically to "Billie Jean". If you want a Cher song that is a Donna Summer soundalike, how about "Bad Love".. It's a great track produced by Giorgio Moroder, Donna's longtime producer and co-written by Cher. There had been talk of Cher taking one of Donna's "Bad Girls" tracks (it's disputed whether it was the title track or "Hot Stuff"). This song is a combo of both.
