LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A 21-year-old up-and-coming rapper was fatally shot Monday afternoon at a popular mall in Los Angeles.

Rap artist Dolla arrives at the Soul Train Music Awards in Pasadena,

California, on March 10, 2007.

Dolla, whose real name is Roderick Anthony Burton II, was shot in the head about 3:10 p.m. at the Beverly Center, his publicist said.

Police later detained a person at the Los Angeles International Airport, said city police spokeswoman Karen Raynar.

Further details were not immediately available about the shooting.

Dolla, who was based in Atlanta, Georgia, was in Los Angeles recording his debut album.

He caught the attention of multiplatinium R&B singer Akon when the then-12-year-old Dolla was performing with friends at showcases around Atlanta.

The two collaborated on Dolla's first single, "Who the F--- Is That?" which also featured another high-profile singer, T-Pain.

Another Dolla song, "Feelin' Myself," appeared on the soundtrack to the 2006 movie "Step Up."

According to his MySpace page, Dolla was born in Chicago, Illinois. His twin sister died at birth because of complications from an enlarged heart.

The family moved to Atlanta after Dolla's father committed suicide while he, then 5, and another sister watched from their parents' bed, the Web page said.

Dolla began composing rhymes in elementary school and decided to pursue a career in music.

Funeral services, which will be held in Atlanta, will be announced later, publicist Sue Vannasing said.

Police: Man arrested in LA killing of rapper
AP, May 19, 2009 10:19 am PDT

Up-and-coming rapper Dolla was killed in a shooting at an upscale shopping mall, and a man was arrested for investigation of murder, police said Tuesday.Los Angeles County Coroner's spokesman Ed Winter said the man killed Monday afternoon at the Beverly Center was 21-year-old Roderick Anthony Burton II, the birth name of rapper Dolla.
Police said in a statement Tuesday that 23-year-old Aubrey Louis Berry of Georgia was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport with a gun Monday night. His bail was set at $1 million.
Burton was shot several times in a parking structure at the Beverly Center, and was later declared dead at a hospital, police said.
Burton's publicist, Sue Vannasing, told the Los Angeles Times that the rapper was waiting at a valet stand after a shopping trip when he was shot.
Police said Berry was found hours later in a ticketing area of Los Angeles International Airport. He was believed to have dropped off a rental car before he was found, said airport police Sgt. Jim Holcomb.
"As the officers approached the suspect, they asked him 'Do you know why we're here?'" Holcomb told The Associated Press. "He put his (hands) up in the air and said, 'Yes, I've got a gun in my waistband. Don't shoot me.'"
Airport police recovered a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun and turned Berry over to Los Angeles police.
Burton, a protege of hip-hop artist Akon, worked on the soundtrack for the 2006 dance film "Step Up" and recently released two singles with Akon: "Like This" and "She So Fine."
His MySpace page said he once modeled for Diddy's Sean John clothing line and was signed to Jive and Elektra record labels. A media contact listed on the MySpace page did not immediately return an e-mail seeking comment.
Burton was working on his second album, "A Dolla and a Dream," which was due to be released on Akon's Konvict Muzik label. A song with T-Pain was titled "Who in the (Expletive) Is That?"
On one of his songs, "Rainy Nights," Burton seemed to foreshadow his own death: "Papa died at 25 so he must have been great, they say the good die young, I guess I'm on my way."

Dolla's Family Disputes Alleged Killer's Claim Of Self-Defense

Aubrey Berry's lawyer said his client had been threatened by Dolla.
By Shaheem Reid

The family of slain rap artist Dolla (real name: Roderick Anthony Burton) responded to claims by the accused killer's lawyer that the shooting was done in self-defense, and that Dolla was a gang member. Aubrey Louis Berry allegedly shot and killed Dolla at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles on Monday. He was arrested later that day and charged Wednesday with two counts of assault with a firearm and one count of murder and is being held on $5 million bail; he has pleaded not guilty and remains in jail.

"There are three victims in this case, none of which is Aubrey Berry," the Burton family's spokesperson, Dennis Byron, said Friday (May 22) in a statement, adding to MTV News that the family was upset by the claim. "His claim of self-defense is very colorful but the fact is that he traveled from Atlanta with a loaded firearm — for which he didn't possess a carry permit for in the state of California — and then he assassinates Mr. Burton and attempts to shoot his cousin Will and his friend DJ Shabazz. Dolla was doing what he normally does, and that is to come to town and record in the studio and visit his family. He has been a recording artist for many years and being a member of any gang is as far-fetched as Mr. Berry's claim of self-defense. Mr. Price is attempting to argue his client's case in the media but the courtroom is where this matter will be dealt with."

On Thursday, Berry lawyer, Howard K. Price, told MTV News that his client had been victimized and threatened by Dolla over a previous incident at an Atlanta nightclub.

"If somebody has a reasonable perception that he is in danger of bodily injury or death, he has a right to defend himself," Price said. "He felt his life was in danger because of the previous altercation and what this guy [Burton] is reputed to be, which is [a member of] the Crips [street gang] and the way he conducted himself ... and the way his crew approached him when they left the restaurant and followed him to the parking lot."

On Friday at 6 p.m., a viewing of Dolla's body will be held in Atlanta, and a memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. Friends, family and fans are welcome to attend the viewing.

It was all over the news out here in So. Cali the day that it happened. It was reported that it was based out of jealousy. Dolla had his car parked in valet parking as well as the two cats who police were after who were in another car. Also in valet parking. Word out here was that these two cats were simply hatin' on Dolla because he had gotten signed and was cutting his album.

It's got the signs of a "hit" written all over it. Or at the very least "payback".
