I remember looking at one of her biography specials and when her contract was up at Epic Records, Kenny Gamble talked about how Patti had experienced all those years in show business, first as the lead singer of the Bluebelles, then as lead singer of LaBelle and then going through her early years as a soloist struggling to find a hit. She literally HAD no hit by the time she signed with Philadelphia International in 1983 and Kenny said he saw that Patti loved to go high even on the FIRST note of the song. He said he figured Patti can sing softly and not so out there so he advised her to retain her vocals until the last minute. That's what made "If Only You Knew" a magical recording because it showed that she could sing a captivating song without going to the gospel so when she DID get there, it was understated and understood while she would SING like that. And Kenny was onto something because it hit #1 on the R&B chart and #46 pop.

This was her FIRST top ten R&B hit, her first NUMBER-ONE R&B hit as a soloist and her FIRST top fifty POP hit so it was a modestly successful crossover hit for Patti. It also reintroduced Patti to a completely new audience who had only known "Lady Marmalade" and they went "oh Patti finally came back, huh?"

Now that I think about it, this was the ONLY Patti LaBelle SOLO track to peak at number-one on any chart. Her only other number-one hit was, of course, "On My Own", with Michael McDonald. Dare I say "If Only You Knew" had a slight pop stance, lol.

I think I saw the same biography. The words that Kenny spoke about Patti were so true.

When she signed with MCA, they gave her songs that (for the most part) utilized the same formula that "If Only YOu Knew" used. Think about songs like "Kiss Away The Pain", "Oh People", "Winner In You", etc. all were songs that had her singing "normal" then going for the big notes at the end.

She is one of my favorite female singers. I think she is truly an anointed singer.

Oh yes. MCA did follow the same formula. That's why I'm amazed that as much little "pop success" she had, it was actually remarkable during that period. Winner in You, the album which featured those songs you mentioned, helped her to get her first and only number-one POP album. At her age and after 24 years in the business, that was a remarkable thing to happen to her. She's one of my favorite female singers too. smile

You are so right about that. It would NEVER happen today. The market tends to look down on veterans in the business.

Think about it, in the 80s, people like Patti, The Beach Boys, Michael, Kiss, Ozzy Osbourn, etc. all managed to have top 10 and number one hits after being in the business 20 and 30 years. Now, someone like Prince, Bruce, Janet, etc. who are still making good music can't crack the top 40, not to mention get radio play. It's a sad day for a talented musician/singer.

It is. There are few who still can manage an R&B hit but as for pop charts, forget it, lol. I hope the music industry realizes that mistake. We're lucky Patti got any pop success at all during that period (1980s). Without it, she wouldn't be called "the living legend" as she is now, that song broke her out.

I was gonna start a whole other thread to ask..

how is Patti's 1979 album "It's Alright With Me"? I noticed Skip Scarborough produced it but bein that it is `79, I have no idea what either's output was like in this era.

I couldn't tell you. I only have a few compilations that contain tracks from her epic period, but I'm not that familiar with this album. I have seen in around LOTS of time, but never took the time to listen to it.

Is this is exactly why I am not a fan of hers or the people that have her as their inspiration. She has a tendency to over sing, songs. I love this because, it is soft and tender. To me, it has more of a meaning when sung this way....

Count me in too. I love this song because she doesn't start megaphoning at the very beginning.
