Is this sort of thing worse coming from a woman?... Don't ask me why or how it came about , but my wife and I were watching these old Khia videos yesterday, and it spurred all sorts of thoughts and questions.
Men, of course, have exploited (and abused) women's sexuality since time immemorial, and women in more recent decades have forged some latitude to perhaps reclaim it toward their own empowerment. But is the sort of thing we see/hear in these videos an empowering reclamation of female sexuality, or a classic exploitation/abuse of it -- only this time at the hands of a woman? Moreover, is this sort of thing somehow worse for coming from a woman? And why, aside from the obvious $$$, would a woman want to do this sort of thing? I'm curious to see what y'all think... NSFW!!! NSFW!!! NSFW!!! [Edited 5/15/09 15:57pm] [Edited 5/15/09 16:24pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I got a question in response to your question - would you watch this kind of video if it was New York from I Love New York? Yeah, what's good for the goose is good for the gander, but what's the phrase - "silly goose". I'm just sayin...

I have no idea what you mean, bruh. Not trying to be funny. I just don't. You were too witty, and I need a nap. But... Would I watch it if it were New York? Maybe... if only to have some familiarity with it when/if debate around it arose. And I'd probably have the same questions. And I'd wonder why New York had lost her mind when she's not known for doing this sort of thing. [Edited 5/15/09 16:22pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

She's absolutely nasty and triflin.
She refers to herself as a B*tch in the first video, that says it all.

"... coming from a woman?"
I'm not sure it REALLY IS coming from a woman. She's performing it -- but is it originating with her? I know nothing about Khia -- aside from the fact that she wants to cook me dinner! Sorry... I couldn't resist -- but I'm guessing that she's produced by men, performing songs often written by men. She probably thinks having an image like this will gain her notoriety and lasting success. Worked for Foxy and Kim...

Shame on Janet for doing a song with this lady Notice that you don't see any other mainstream artists trying to work with her. She's a one-hit loser.

I think JD did it behind her back for some reason. "So Excited" didn't really need her crappy voice in it. I heard Janet and Khia never even met so I don't think Janet wanted to do one. "So Excited" was actually the wrong song to release for the second single. Not to mention that video was weird as fuck.

I think many would be willing to do almost anything for the sweet taste of fame.
It even impacts Donald Trump the billionaire. I' be very surprised if she didn't go off on anyone that dared criticize her rhymes. Nothing at all wrong with female sexuality. It's a beautiful thing. Very beautiful. But there's absolutely no intellect, no beauty, no empowerment here. This is the musical equivalent of porn. But, I know, freedom of speech and anyone can do and say whatever they want. Live and let live. It's just somewhat depressing that this mindless drivel is considered living.

Khia is vile so I don't doubt she wrote her own stuff. Yes, there ARE women like this, she just happened to have a mic in front of her.
As far as exploitation it's not cool in male or female hands, but I guess I'm a little more comfortable w/ a woman being unafraid to do her thing. But it all seems to circle back to the same sad conclusion really...

I hate her especially for what she said about Janet

It all boils down to the intention and context of the sexuality on display. If it's meant as a positive, as a celebration of women's sexuality then I'm all for it. It's when things cross that line from empowerment to exploitation that it becomes more murky. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Worked for Foxy and Kim... She writes, publishes and distributes all of her own material, a complete one woman show. She's trailblazing only in that she's one of the few females in rap who's done it just as the boys have done before her with this business model, pushing the number of units that she has...unfortunately, what she's also pushing is a cancer on intellect...as least as far as I'm concerned. I could do without her. Her vlogs and interviews are something to be witnessed to be believed, that's for sure

O.k. so Khia might not make Kindergarten Teacher of the year. But I'm sure Oscar would upgrade his bin if she moved into Sesame Street. and embarrassed is what part of empowerment?
