Hilary Duff was the first, but that was nothing compared to the juggernaut that was High school musical, a film, like dozens of other made for Disney channel movies, that was never meant to set the cash registers ringing half as much as it did. I think Miley Cyrus was created to fill the void of Hillary Duff. Iam not an expert on this, but Iam pretty sure she left Disney (as opposed to Disney leaving her), so they tried someone/something new. Mind you, Duff was a tv star first, as opposed to Miley, who was cleverly marketed as a pop star in her tv show, this being able to cross over, ala Monkees, into other media like music.

It'll end eventually. Disney tried for several years in the early 90's with The Party. As a fan of early 90's music, I love some of their stuff. Even Mickey Mouse Club did an album back then. Unfortunately, The Party were just a little too late with their albums, as the musical climate shifted quite radically in the US to grunge and gangter rap. That and perhaps being marketed as NOKTB clones, even in 1990/1991, looked abit dated for then. People were moving on by then....

....With the unpresedented sucsess of High School Musical, closely followed by the cleverly calculated Hannah Montana etc.., Disney finally found the right time to release their kiddy friendly pop. Nobody saw it coming, not even Disney initially.
