I love me some 1983-1984 Someone had a post about how much the new era sucked and that led to thoughts about different periods in music. I love how music can take your memory back to a specific place in time. ...Anyway - my old high school basketball teammate is making a drive from California to Georgia and he asked me to hook him up with some driving music.
My initial thoughts flashed to when we were sweating our prep butts off in the gym for a very demanding coach. We always had music playing before practice and on the bus rides. It was the 1983-84 season... I made the first CD and I was moved by the music. Songs on the disc included... Reach Out - George Duke Night Rider - Midnight Star (Billie Jean alternate version I call it ) Radioactivity - Royalcash Candy Man - Mary Jane Girls Irresistible Bitch - Prince (so funky.) Lady Cab Driver - Prince No One's Gonna Love You - S.o.S. Band (mmmmm) Curious - Midnight Star Friends - Whodini Encore - Chery Lynn Ain't Nobody - Chaka Khan Change of Heart - Change Don't Look Any Further - Dennis Edwards Bad Girl - Slave Trip You In Love - Clarke/Duke Project (I LOVE this song!!!!) Love You Anyway - Cameo (the jazzy guitar is super sick) This is For You - The System Anybody else in love with 1983 - 1984?

1983 was one of the greatest years for pop music.I can't believe how many amazing songs came out that year! Such an exciting time.1984 was also an incredible time for pop music. So much was happening all at once...
*the MTV video revolution *the emergence of Prince and Michael Jackson, who were both taking the world by storm *R&B was in great shape too, with bands like Midnight Star,Mtume,New Edition,DeBarge, and artists like Rick James,Teena Marie,The Time, etc. I'm glad that I was there to witness all this

I was all over stuff like Midnight Star, The Deele, Whodini, The System, Shalamar, S.O.S. and other early Jam/Lewis prods. Love Cheryl Lynn's Encore (one of my favorite Jam/Lewis tunes). The mention of this song reminds of a question I've had for a while about Cheryl's Preppie album -- why did John Barnes reuse the music for "Love Rush" on Janet Jackson's "Don't Stand Another Chance" or vice versa? I didn't catch this until recently. It's the exact same song, musically. Actually, Don't Stand Another Chance is another great one from that time period. Those years were when I was really getting into funk. Got the "No Parking" album on vinyl for Christmas in Dec. '83 -- I was hooked. That was my second Solar album of that year -- bought Shalamar's "The Look" on cassette earlier that fall. Good times... good times.
