Rod Temperton wrote If We Try. The album was recorded in 1979 and released sometime in the 90s. Phil Ramone produced it. As much as I love The Carpenters (and Karen's voice), I don't much care for it.

I'm on a late reply, lol.

Yeah, a buddy of mine hipped me to Karen's self-titled solo album. I think it has linernotes by her brother and by producer Phil Ramone, who RipHer2Shreds mentioned earlier.
Also, one of the last albumtracks is a somewhat unfinished composition with Karen improvising certain parts while talking in between to either the producer, musicans, or engineers.
Interesting to hear that part of the production-process.

Great studio-musicians performing on there, including Louis Johnson on "If We Try" and the opening track titled "Lovelines" :
