Classic songs that you're sick of hearing

Don't get me wrong,I really do love these songs.But,I am getting so sick of hearing them!! Some of these songs are sampled to death by rappers,and most of them are played too often on Oldies radio stations.If I didn't hear these songs for the next two years,that would be fine with me...

***"Between The Sheets" by The Isley Brothers---As EllisDee pointed out on another thread,this song has been sampled to death by the rappers,and now Whitney Houston is sampling it on her new single.It's a great song and all,but DAMN!!

***"Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye---Marvin is one of the best R&B singers of all-time and this song remains a true classic.But they play it too damn much! Wouldn't it be cool if radio DJS could go back and dig up some of his lesser known songs,like "You Sure Love To Ball"(1973)?

***"Always And Forever" by Heatwave---Yes,it's a beautiful song and the lyrics are wonderful.But,this song is WAY overrated,imo.I prefer lesser known Heatwave ballads like "Happiness Togetherness","Star Of A Story","Sho Nuff Must Be Love" and "Where Did I Go Wrong".

***"Very Special" by Debra Laws---In the summer of '81,I loved this song.But now,for some reason,this song is kinda annoying to me.The lyrics are unfocused and repetitive,and the whole thing hasn't aged very well.

***"Fire And Desire" by Rick James and Teena Marie---I like this song because it reminds me of the summer of '81,a time when Rick James was on top.However,this song was never one of my favorites by him.Both he and Teena "over-sing" on this tune,and the lyrics are absurd ("tasted your teardrop stains,yeah"???).I'm not saying it's a bad song (the music is great),it's just way overrated and gets too much airplay on Oldies radio stations.

"Stairway To Heaven"- The fact that i could get sick of a ballad this powerful shows you how overplayed it is
"Bridge Over Troubled Water"
"It Takes 2" DJ EZ Rock and Rob Bass "rapper's Delite" Sugarhill gang-both hot as hell when they came out and historically important, these records are now an overplayed staple of your local club's/radio station's 80's nights

Anything Dion.

Anything even remotly sounding like Dion.

Anything looking like Dion too. (Forgive for that since I really consider myself open minded but I cant help myself...)

Ah well count in Bon Jovi too. The male Dion.

both cant really be called classic and I hope they never will be.

these are songs that i get sick of getting requests for when i was doing "eargasm"...

* "brickhouse" by the commodores
* "give up the funk" by parliament
* "the thrill is gone" by b.b. king
* "r-e-s-p-e-c-t" & "natural woman" by aretha
* "strokin'" by clarence carter
* "sexual healing" or "let's get it on" by marvin gaye
* "papa was a rolling stone" by the temptations
* "get down on it" & "celebration" by kool & the gang
* "shaft" by isaac hayes
if you were to walk up to the average joe on the street, chances are these are the only songs by these artists that he could identify... thankfully, my audience was able to grow and learn songs like "fancy dancer," "supergroovalisticprofunkstication," "hyperbollicsyllabicsesquedalymistic"... but there would always be that funk/soul novice, who only knew those same damn songs...

and as for classic rock... jimi had a lot more going for him than "hey joe" & "all along the watchtower" (songs he didn't even write)...

and speaking of "watchtower," bob dylan did not become of the most important men in rock history based soley on "rainy day women" & "knockin' on heaven's door"...

have they heard of "dancing with mr. d," "memory motel," "stray cat blues"..? i didn't think so... i suppose that means more "satisfaction," "start me up," & "paint it black"...

does john lennon have any songs other than "imagine"... sure, and most of them kick ass... you won't be hearing them on the radio though...

and songs that have been ruined by television commercials...

"you sexy thing" by hot chocolate
"love train" by the o'jays
"strawberry letter 23" by the brothers johnson
"who's that lady" by the isley brothers

Just about anything on classic rock stations. Most of the bands are or were cool, but c'mon, around the clock oldies?
Jeez, get a life if all you want to listen to are the same old songs from the 60's and 70's.

There are a few songs from the R&B/disco era that get played practically everyday like it was released literally yesterday and they have to promote the heck out of it. Right now I'm blanking tho...

"Best of My Love" The Emotions...I'd much rather hear "Flowers"

"We Are Family" Pointer Sisters

"Ring My Bell" Anita Ward

From the classic rock realm:
Anything by Elvis

This is my own lil list of songs that get played too much that I'm sure the rest of the world is tired of hearing, but I'll never tire of it. Sometimes I just need nonsensical songs in my life.

"Boogie Oogie Oogie" A Taste of Honey

"Funkytown" Lipps, Inc.

"Boogie Wonderland" Earth Wind & Fire w/ The Emotions
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!
"It's just my imagination, once again running away with me."

Almost anything by Zapp and Roger.I rarely listen to their Greatest Hits anymore.I like them,and they had some funky grooves,but alot of their stuff sounds alike (is there really any difference between "DanceFloor" and "I Can Make You Dance"?).

In the above thread the Pointer Sisters are credited with or blamed for "We Are Family" and "It's Raining Men" when in actuality "It's Raining Men" is by the Weather Girls and "We Are Family" is by Sister Sledge.
The Pointer Sister do offend though. "I'm So Excited" is just awful, as is "The Neutron Dance" wtf is that about?

Y'all suck who said The Beatles, Pink Floyd Led Zeppelin, or the Stones. 4 of my fave bands...listening to "Exile on Main St" right now.

But Classic Rock radio they play the same shit...and the have been for YEARS. I mean, I love Stairway to Heaven...but even I see that they play that too much...Zeppelin has a lot of great tunes the radio never touches.

Other songs I am SICK to death of,

Baba O'Riley by The Who...love the band but starting to HATE the song.

Aqua Lung by Jethro Tull...why do people like this?

Tom Sawyer by Rush..fucking HATE Rush.

Anything on "Thriller"...they overplayed that album so much in the 80's that I STILL can't listen to it. I like MJ for Off The Wall and Destiny, but anything after it is just played too much.

...and yeah I am kinda sick of 1999, When Doves Cry, & Kiss for the same reason as Thriller.

Good thread. The reason we get so sick of these songs is because of NOSTALIGIA RADIO and the fact that it won't allow ANY new music. Nothing wrong with honoring the past, but not at the expense of new music - and please, nobody try and tell me there is no good new music. There is good music of every era no matter how bad it gets.

"I Heard It Through The Grapevine" - Marvin's version is wayyy too overplayed. I dig Gladys Knight & The Pips version much more.

"Brick House"/Commodores - I used to like this song til the advent of Old School radio formats wore it the f@#$ out. LOVED how the rhythm section was so locked in on the intro, NOW...I won't allow myself to listen anymore.

"Always & Forever"/Heatwave - the most overrated, overplayed, rote love song on Old School radio you'll find. It gets on my damn last nerve. Give me Heatwave's "Star Of A Story" over that schlock ANY day.

"Superfreak"/Rick James - I think MC Hammer helped to ensure this song's death.

"Do You Feel Like I Do"/"Baby I Love Your Way"/Peter Frampton - from the most successful live album of all time, Frampton Comes Alive. I got no beef with Frampton, in fact I like the guy. I even like the studio version of "Do You Feel Like I Do?" but I'm sick to death of Classic Rock radio's 26+ year saturation of these songs into the airwaves. And the latter song gave Will To Power a reason to BE.

"Black Dog"/Led Zeppelin - Zoso was their best album til radio slobbered all over its knob for 30+ years.

EVERY SINGLE from Thriller (except "Human Nature").

EVERY SONG by Lynard Skynard. barf

"I Got You" aka "I Feel Good"/James Brown - JB, you are THE DADDY, but that one's grooves are worn.

"After The Love Has Gone"/EW&F - their most palatable ballad, but not close to being one of their best.

"Reasons"/EW&F - yeah, I said it. Way too overplayed, way too overwrought. If you want to hear Phillip Bailey's best vocal performance, check "I'll Write A Song For You." Many times emotive understatement can be more powerful than hammers.

EVERYTHING by Rush.

"My Girl"/The Temptations - nothing wrong with simple, sometimes that's the what a song should be. But some songs are a bit tooo simple.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
