Stevie Nicks....a thief?

Im a huge Stevie Nicks fan but I must admit that my mouth dropped when I recently heard this song by the Police:
"Bring On the Night"(1979)
http://www.youtube.com/wa...z1mEMiNPHQ

Stevie Nicks.."Edge of seventeen"(1981)
http://www.imeem.com/peop...seventeen/

I havent looked at my BellaDonna record to see if Stevie credited STING with any type of writing credit. Does anyone know if Stevie has admitted to the direct lift?

Speaking of plagarism, Yusef Islam or The Artist Formerly Known As Cat Stevens, has now come out claiming that Coldplay have stolen certain chord structures from his 1973 song The Foreigner Suite - Part II, for their massive hit, Viva La Vida!! So, lets see, thats Joe Satriani and Cat Stevens so far that have claimed Coldplay as theives!!!!! lol lol lol lol

LOL, they're all pikers compared to Led Zeppelin:

Unfortunately, the guy had to take down the music (there's some great Mozart instead), but you can flash through the video and read the text.

I thought I asked this before but maybe I never saw the answer or just killed the thread, but my question is when did sampling offically start? I can think of other blatant examples of samples not being given credit as late as the early eighties.

It is a tradition in American folk music to borrow the melodies of already popular songs and write new lyrics for them. Dylan did a lot of "sampling" as many folks artist have.
