I always liked Stewart Copeland's songs in The Police. 'Does Everyone Stare' is great too.

Despite me thinking Sting's a big, over-rated hack, I would still like to finally get into The Police.

I heard a Leo Sayer tune the other day..."More Than I Can Say" and it instantly affirmed my notion that Sting's a hack. "Every Breath You Take" rips off Sayer that I want to assume Sayer called up a lawyer or two.

It is, maybe, my favourite Police-song!
See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...

"Every Breath You Take" came out before Leo Sayer's version of "More Than I Can Say". Sayer's version was a cover. Bobby Vee originally did the tune. I've never heard the original.

My sources indicate otherwise:

The Police - Synchronicity - "Every Breath You Take" - June 1983
Leo Sayer - Living In A Fantasy - "More Than I Can Say" - 1980

source: allmusic.com

Now, my argument doesn't depend upon who originally wrote "More Than I Can Say." I'm suggesting that Sting heard Sayer's 1980 version and either outright nicked it, or was heavily influenced by it subconsciously. Now, I admit that it is possible for Sting to have written his before ever hearing Sayer's tune, but c'mon!

EDIT:

allmusic.com lists Jerry Allison and Sonny Curtis as the songwriters for "More Than I Can Say." I just caught a video of Leo Sayer's version at youtube. Sting nicked it.

I was about to say. I couldn't watch it at the time of my posting. That's my favorite melancholy song.
