I grew up in 80s too and there were good perms/curls/weaves and busted ass perms/curls/weaves. THIS thread is clearly about the busted ass variety. So unless you were a member of the busted ass crew I don't see what the big deal is. shrug

You just took me back to my pre/early teens, for real!!!

Girl, girl , GIRL...if I don't admit the truth, I am going to be hit by lightening before I can finish this post lol . But sure enough, I did try the pineapple waves...had to be in the early 80's maybe confuse...and you know how it was back then, this was a time when people still had the hair hook-up in somebody's house smile. I'll never forget, it was my big sister's best friend who my mom nicknamed Long-Legged-Angie. She was that tall, light-skinned-ed perfect body type who was homecoming queen, studying cosmetology, and popped her gum all the time. We lived one neighborhood over from hers, and I'll never forget,she used to have her mom's basement crackin' on Saturdays, she did uuurybody's hair in her neighborhood, and the few little black families in mine. She was STACKIN'dough (partly to pay for her wedding expenses to her miltary high shcool boo)...she used to slap all kinds of hairstyles up in our heads...crackin' that damn gum the whole time she was in your head with that comb! She'd be like;

"I know you seent this right??? (pop, pop)" ,

(handing you a magazine photo from some Black Hair Magazine, or worse some cosmetology show )

"you know this is the latest thing, right?"(crackle pop, pop)

"You needta come over and let me try this on you, just like a trial period thing" (pop, chew, crackle, pop)..

"..and when when you like it, I'mon give you the discount price next time (pop, pop)"

and then before you could get anything out in protest she'd be like,

"Girl, please you got ta be adventurous, and try somethin NEW. Don't be stayin' in the same place wit'cho beauty regimen! bored2" (blows a big bubble yum bubble to accent her point)

and sure enough she had every last one of us in care free curls, pineapple waves, lopsided hair cuts (I think OPTIMUM was the business back then), you name it. At some point in the early early 80's I'm sure I tried all three falloff falloff

The FEATHER CUT!

I remember it took my big sister a MINUTE to let her feather cut go, and one of her girlfriends wasn't having it! One of her friends who used to work at the neighborhhod coffeehouse was like,

"Girl, when you gon' change this look? You walkin' around here with that same cut, lookin' like Always with Wings in here hmm....

...needless to say, she switched to whatever the hot look was by the next week. Is this btw, when we all started dying our hair that purplish/plum color?

I remember she worked that plum highlight dye into her regimen while my lopsided head discovered what I thought would be the joy of Sun-In
spray, later realizing quite disasterously that shit was NOT going to give my black ass any blond streaks what.so.ever wink

My damned head came out looking like Carrot Top after I used that mess.

You know what? The more I think about my 80's hair crimes, I just realized I seriously need to call my mama and see how I can confiscate all the pictures she has of me from age 12-15...

Let me explain: We had a thread about the good perms, curls, and fros of the past, so it only right to do about the bad ones lol It's not that the styles were terrible, but how they looked on certain people

Hell I grew up in the 90s and was around for the gumby, the bowl fade with the nike sign, the Kriss Kross twists, finger waves, and the rat tail. The styles looked alright on some people, but on others...hell naw lol

Even in the entertainment industry. Rememeber in the 1980s when the women wore heavy makeup and looked real pretty. Since the 1990s, they still wear makeup but they wear more "natural" looking makeup and the pale lipsticks. They look like ho's in training to become whores. Kinda like Beyonce. lol
