Van Halen 1984 - Classic or Dud?

I know this album was controversial when it came out due to the fact that they used sunthesizers but it also had quite a few hits as well. I love me some "Jump" that song is classic but how about the rest? I need some classic hair metal to rock out to!! Should I get this one??

Are you serious? This is one of the all time classic 80's records . Forget the term 'Hair Metal,' this record was loved by ALL types of fans upon release. Hits? Try Hot for Teacher, Panama, Jump, I'll Wait . I was never much more than a casual VH fan but I WAS 13 when this record came out and believe me when I tell you it was a huge monster hit.

Oh FUCK, I LOVE THIS ALBUM, dancerella!

Girl you need to get it. It's awesome. I bought the 2001 Warner Remasters edition from Best Buy for like $10.99 I think. Sound is excellent on it.

Drop Dead Legs
Hot 4 Teacher
Panama
Jump [FUCKING CLASSIC]
I'll Wait [synths for days on this one]
Top Jimmy
Girl Gone Bad

...pretty much the whole album is loaded in synths, heavy guitars, great vocals.

I'm gonna queue it up later tonight, just because you made this thread. peace

I think "Jump" is a great tune but the song that gets me crunk is "Drop Dead Legs." It's the only Van Halen record I thoroughly enjoy.

I know people go on about their debut but 1984 and Women And Children First are their best albums. A classic hands down.

...and I thought House of Pain was the last-best thing VH ever did on record. Everything after that just sucked in comparison, really

The fact that Eddie employed keyboards in the song Jump did have some folks talking about it initially. I remember it being discussed by the VJ's on MTV and it was written about in the premire rock mags of the day, Rolling Stone, Creem and Circus. But after the first wave of "Oh, Is VH going pop?" the song just kept rolling right along and up the charts and taking the album right along with it. Being a VH nut at that time, I myself loved this album. Yeah, my favs from them at that time and still to this day is their debut and Diver Down, but 1984 was and is a monster of an album. A true classic no doubt.

Classic! "Drop Dead Legs" is Funk/Rock at it's finest. The only people who complained were those that didn't like the idea of the "guitar hero" having such a huge impact with a keyboard based song. Whatever. Edward played piano before guitar, so it was well within his musical universe to go there. And he did straight to #1 with "Jump"!

Still love Jump, Panama, Hot For Teacher, Drop Dead Legs and Top Jimmy . The other songs not so much, unlike their debut where I love every song.

Videos when Videos meant a damn, and had a purpose. This album is a classic, and it was from day one, you wont hear that kind of talk anymore. The reason, radio was not only playing the singles, ROCK radio was playing the album cuts, remember those things, remember DJ's flipping over an A SIDE and playing a B side, remember when Lionel Richie was fucking on fire and charting B side "Deep River Woman" because some DJ flipped it, or when Rick Springfield charted a top 40 B SIDE with Taxi Dancing a duet with RANDY CRAWFORD, aah the days when radio was an adventure and DJ's werent robots.

I was with you until you made this comment. Lionel Richie had sold the
fuck out with this album. Dancing on the Ceiling was a joke. You wouldn't
catch any true commodore fan dead with this album in their collection. lol

Hell yeah Dancerella. I know you love synths so you need to check out "I'll Wait" from this album as well as "Jump". You'll also love the intro to "Jump" which is called "1984".

This has been mentioned here before, but the synth chord progression in "Jump" sounds very similar to "Dirty Mind". Which is cool, because during that time, Prince and Van Halen were my favorite bands.
