I was sitting in my car today and thought of another one... COLONEL ABRAMS! falloff

When I was in college, we were so into him and thought he was FINE! Well a couple of years ago, my brother who's a DJ, and told me he was going to be working at this show and I could meet him... I took a much younger coworker- even lent her my old cassette from college so she'd know the music. lol

He came out lookin' like a crackhead- clothes hangin' off him, teeth all rotten.... eek
He was lip-synching over his records that MY BROTHER was spinning... disbelief
Then he had the NERVE to come into the crowd and try to grind up on my friend & me in the front row. omfg All these old ladies rushed down front to get to him, so we stepped aside. ill

My brother STILL teases me about that show! mad

Ray Charles 1988: He was at the Holiday Inn Plaza Theatre in Merrillville IN. I paid some serious bucks to have my mother and her friend enoy a meal, drinks, and concert; I'm pleased to say my mother and her friend enjoyed the meal and drinks.

What was the problem? The a-hole wanted to sing C&W music all damn night and NOBODY wanted to hear it . Folks started cat calling and yelling out his R&B hits/tunes. Charles stopped and said, "Since you aren't up here playing you don't get to choose the music, I play what I want". Some folks got up and walked out while most muttered under their breath with faint applause. I arrived late and stood out in the lobby and dranked cocktails.

Three weeks later, the S.O.B. played Riviana to rave reviews and played every damn classic and then some.... two encores. I never went to see that asshole in concert again. In fact, Charles was in Grant Park for free - Jazz Fest - I refuse to go.

Meat Loaf in 2006. I saw him in 1993 and it was a great show, but since then, he has completely lost his voice. It was terrible and embarrasing to watch him. He didn´t get a single note right. First concert ever I walked out of.

The Isley Brothers - 1980. Bunch of old dudes, pimp walkin' around the stage with fur coats, hats, and canes. The only one really playing any music was Ernest, but even his talent wasn't enough to carry the entire concert. Though in retrospect, I'm glad to have seen them on stage in their (post-60's) hey-day, when they were all still together as a group. But I swear, I couldn't see the point of ALL of them being on stage just profiling & boppin' their heads to the music.

Oh darlin', YES. The last time I must have seen them in.... would have been '99 or 2000 at the South Beach (soul) Music Festival, and outside of the vintage uptempo stuff, it was a HOT.MESS. All that tacky-fied pimp posturing using some dancers as sexy stage props in lingerie....my girlfriends and I were just sitting watching this mess like whofarted That whole "Misogyny 101" thing is so played out bored2

Two years ago,I saw Sly and The Family Stone in concert and it was an odd experience lol The band came out before him,did three or four songs, then Sly finally came out, played keyboards and sang a little, then disappeared! He was onstage for about ten minutes! When he left the stage, most people got up and left.

Still,I'm thrilled that I got to see him.He's a legend,you know.

Saw him live at the Pori Jazz festival here in Finland. He did a song or two, then went backstage and said something like "Don't worry, I'll be back". He never came back. Nevertheless, like you said, it was nice seeing him live. He IS Sly Stone after all lol

I must say, when he was onstage performing,he was great. He did an excellent version of "If You Want Me To Stay".The audience went wild! The problem is,he left the stage after only a few songs. It appears that he's only capable of doing a few songs, for a brief period of time.

Amen. Even Prince is capable of putting on a crap performance, and having listened to his music for what, 30 years, and seeing performances 25 of those years? Oh hell yes, he has DEFINTELY put on an uninterested, smug, shit-ass performance or two in his time, make no mistake about that... smoker

Badly Drawn Boy. He had a habit of getting really drunk around the time I saw him and sadly, he was on this occasion. Songs were half finised, he got aggresive and embarassinlgy got his fiance up on stage to slur through the last number with him.

Must have been a bad night for Keith. I saw him perform at The Hollywood Palace in 1989, and THAT was one of the slammin'ness concerts I've ever been to, lol. It was at a high point in his career, and he was very happy to be finally performing in Hollywood.

His music was some of my favorite, back then... but his stage presence (the night I saw him perform) was killed by his LIVE voice, he was not intune at all. It was like, or it seemed he relied too much on the studio assistance of voice enhancements.

I still enjoy hearing his music randomly. Maybe I should of gone to the concert you went to, with you. wink

I believe everybody has bad days (and all artists have their bad gig here and there), I guess it's hard to pull off consistently great shows night after night. But his voice was strong and on key when I saw him, and his presence was magnetic, everybody in the place was grooving with the wave of his hands, literally (he sings with his hands a lot, lol).

And yeah, no doubt... if you had attended the show I was at, you would have had a great time. All hands were in the air, as Keith was in the moment.

Definitely the Who in 1989 at LA Coliseum. They are maybe my favorite band of all time & usually incredible live. But this was just wrong. Instead of a 4 or 5-piece high-energy crew with Pete Townshend's guitar cranked up, they had a small orchestra of about 15 people filling up every gap with inappropriate horn stabs and harpsichord melodies, while Pete played an acoustic that couldn't be heard. It was like watching Van Halen with the guitar turned off, and a bunch of string players trying to make it sound "exciting". They did some good songs that are rarely played live but it all sounded horrible.

NIN in 2005 was the most ridiculously boring show I have ever seen. Trent looked like he'd rather be home watching TV, and the rest of the band was just as lacklustre. The crowd was filled with folk all decked out in their gothiest finery, but judging by the audience reaction during the performance, no one recognized anything but Closer and Hurt.

prince's "aftershow" at the house of blues chicago. just awful! came on two hours late, wasnt on stage for half the show, when he was on stage he hit a couple keys on the keyboard while the band covered classic gems like "no diggity". finally he was played controversy at 5am...but we were already walking out. the one and only time i've booed prince. the venue even gave me a voucher good for tickets to any show i wanted to see in the future. yeah, the show was so bad even the venue copped to it.

wait. didn't you guys initially get kicked out? lol

oh well. either way. i was there too, and even though that show was deeply flawed, it was an aftershow and i enjoyed it for what it was. i had a great time. shrug

I enjoyed Keith Sweat in concert back in the day as well. Although, I believe that Al B. Sure was on the same tour and he was a mess, completely out of tune.

I saw R. Kelly when he was just starting out. He was the opening act for Salt 'n Peppa. After he was done with his set, he abruptly pulled down his pants and raised both arms in the air. He stood up there with his arms raised, wearing a tight little bikini or thong...I was NOT amused. disbelief

I hope it was just a bad night! eek I really want to see Goldfrapp live lol

I hate to make excuses for Goldfrapp b/c if you're a great band like you claim you should be great a majority of the time. I guess I saw them when they were @ their shittiest state. It was their last U.S. show [or show in general] of their Supernature promotional tour. And they're "worn and tired" from touring the world. Ok, well, go out with a bang @ least for your fans!

I think it was more than just a bad night. It's how their fans really are. Lots of ghetto gay people if you can imagine that. Ghetto gays. Ghettofied, pushing, name-calling. They were throwing things at Ratatat the opening act.

I can find it somewhat humorous, I guess. Actually no I can't. But I swear when I was leaving the venue I was about to start fighting because some dudes were pushing everybody to get out the Roseland [the venue]
because they couldn't stand how slow everyone was moving. I swear I was a minute away from just going at whoever that was in there.

All of this left an incredibly bad impression.
[Edited 5/1/09 11:27am]

I sort of agree with you about that show in that it was the worst Goldfrapp show I've ever attended. I wrote this review on Myspace afterward:

Oct 18th: GOLDFRAPP at Roseland: Wow, my third Goldfrapp show in the last 12 months--New York City is very special. I would have to say though that of the three concerts, this was the one I enjoyed the least. This show was Allison and the band's big finish before going back into the studio and for this grand finale, the usual two female dancers were supplemented with two more so for a few songs we had four hot bodies (Alison excluded) prancing and grinding onstage ("Ride A White Horse" was the exception--my guess being the band wasn't able to have two additional crystal horse heads made). Alison still looked great, wearing what could be described as a sort of red, bondage, micro mini-raincoat (her black knickers underneath were clearly visible). There were some technical difficulties as Alison kept on retreating to the side of the stage to get her mic untangled from the straps on her outfit and for "Black Cherry" Alison seemed to have trouble hearing her voice (she might have been singing along to prerecorded tracks that night) or she just totally lost it in the middle of the song. But these things are not what marred the show for me. The band's unique brand of electro-glam sounded fine from where I stood (front and center as usual), but the setlist was almost exactly the same and in the exact same order as the last two shows. I was really hoping for a surprise song or two that NYC had not heard live yet, but it didn't happen. And the most annoying fan in the world was standing behind me for most of the night yelling requests they would never do in a million years and singing quite horribly along to every song in my ear. It took all my self control to resist from turning around and bopping little Obnoxio the clown on the top of his head.

Setlist:

Supernature (Cerrone) (intro)
Utopia
Lovely Head
Tiptoe
Train
Koko
Slide In
You Never Know
Satin Chic
Fly Me Away
Beautiful
Ride A White Horse
Ooh La la

Encore 1:
Black Cherry
Number 1

Encore 2:
Strict Machine

85 minutes

That's a shame you haven't seen Goldfrapp since because the Seventh Tree shows were in seated venues which I think eliminated many of the problems from that Roseland show.

I know she does not get much love on here sometimes but Alicia Keys at the O2 (I think that was this February 2009).

Me and the missus have all her albums and As I Am has some great tracks on it. I was really looking forward to seeing her live. We had great seats, close to the front of the stage but something about the show just didn't work. It (or Alicia herself was just lacking a bit of spark). her voice was fine and she did talk to the audience a little. but it had no fire.

We discussed it afterwards and wondererd if it was because in the first section she was doing the whole Beyonce-style, standing and singing with 2 dancers rather than sitting at a piano Stevie-style (which we probably would have preferred). Perhpas being something she is not (obviously the upbeat numbers like Teenage Love Affair etc were fun and a bit of animated Alicia was in order but still...).

It was like her heart was not in it. Maybe she was feeling a bit under the weather. confused

Or maybe it took a live encounter to make you see how how insipid she really is.

As for me, the only concert that comes to mind is Prince in 1995. He did none of his classic material, Mayte was making a nuisance of herself on the side of the stage and Prince seemed lost in his own world. It had it's moments, but on the way back home I recall an Irishman declaring to the whole train carriage that the show was shit. Only one woman disagreed.

It was pretty much the end of his time as a major contemporary figure in the UK. When The Gold Experience was released a few months later, it was the first Prince album I didn't buy.
