New Download is up!!! DEEP DIGGIN' - The ultimate thread for vinyl nerds and Funk heads!

Update: Download for last night's Deep Diggin' Vol. 2 on Midnight Soulstice right here:

http://wrir.org/x/modules...oryid=9843

---
I know we got enough vinyl junkies on this forum. The purpose of this thread is for you to show what you got - share your love for your most favorite records!

What did you find and pick up at your most recent weekend dig? What are the jewels in your collection? Which rare and not so rare tracks do you want to share with the rest of us? Turn us on to what's hot! You may post pictures of your finds, and you may post Youtube clips of the songs you dig.

Now this thread has a few rules.

1. Limit your picks to vintage Soul, Funk, Boogaloo, Jazz, Latin, Blues, oldschool R&B and New Funk. Absolutely no Hip Hop, Neo Soul, Pop, Rock, Metal, House, Techno or Jim Croche!!!

2. Keep it strictly vinyl.

3. Write a few things about the track you show. Why you like it, where you found it, why it's special to you.

4. Don't embed YouTube clips, please just show the clips. We already got too many clips on the first page, which takes a long time to load. I'll remove my own embedded clips and just leave the links.

Over the next months, we'll also have Deep Diggin' motto on our weekly radio show Midnight Soulstice, where we show you what we think is good and what we think you should also add to your collection. Hopefully this thread will stay alive long enough for you guys to inspire us and hip us to some new music that we can play on our show!
Our first Deep Diggin' show will be aired this Friday, April 24th, from 11 pm - 1 am Eastern Time live on www.wrir.org But this thread is not about the radio show - the radio show will be part of this thread!

I'll start off with some tracks that we'll play on the show this Friday.

The Main Ingredient - Happiness is just around the Bend
Not a rare track. But a great track. The perfect sound to make you feel good this spring, and a nice choice to introduce you to the Main Ingredient, one of the great Soul vocal groups of the 1970s.
http://www.youtube.com/wa...gSbTYbvivM

Jade - Music Slave
Now this one's tough to find. We're from Virginia, and this one's a VA track, by a group from Norfolk called Jade. They released only one album (if you lucky, you'll find it on Ebay once in a while for around $1,000), but every track on that album is a killer. Worth every penny of the $1k.
http://www.youtube.com/wa...qBLGYl049c

Archie Whitewater - Cross Country
One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Archie Whitewater wasn't a dude but the name of a racially mixed group which released one very hard to find album on Cadet Concept in 1970. They recorded a second album, which remained unreleased. This song's my favorite, an absolute winner.
http://www.youtube.com/wa...Z-db8uxDQI

Marie Queenie Lyons - See and don't see
Another winner and one of the deepest tracks ever. Marie Queenie Lyons recorded only one album, which was released on DeLuxe in 1969 - a subsidiary of King Records. The album has been reissued, make sure to pick it up. The 45 of this song however is tough to find.
http://www.youtube.com/wa...Xy4FzvK_5k

Julie Driscoll / Brian Auger - Season of the Witch
This one's really nice if you are into psychdelic drugs. But even with a nice, cold beer or glass of wine you'll enjoy this trippy song. Brian Auger is on organ - nuff said. I've been in love with this one since I first heard it 15 years ago.
http://www.youtube.com/wa...pizS9h-1Xk

The Capitols - Hello Stranger
I just found this one at a dig in Phoenix, AZ. A DJ I worked with used to play it as the last song at the end of a sweaty club night, and it made people hug each other and you could see grown men cry. I played it last weekend, and the reactions were the same.
http://www.youtube.com/wa...kXB2gXdfQg

Skip Mahoney and the Casuals - Town called no-where
A great record from Washington, DC. I found this in DC a couple of years ago and paid $10 for it. There was a stack of about five of them. I should have bought them all, because now the value is up to about $100, and it's a hot record in the Soul scene at the moment.
http://www.youtube.com/wa...xo8ZGrc8s0

The Soul Messengers - Victory
This group emerged out of a bunch of black Hebrews. They were formed in the U.S., but later moved to Liberia and then recorded in Israel. Insane.
http://www.youtube.com/wa...UE0gEIAgeo

Sons of the Kingdom - Modernization
Another version of the Soul Messengers (see above). This one's a later record, released in 1980. Still a smash.

Good one. You should get the album.

Nuff said. lol The other essential Dyke 45s are Let a women be a woman and a man be a man (my favorite, played it at the Hip Joint) and Runaway People.

Sugar Billy- Super Duper Love / Fast Track

Man I love this cut.

Yeah, it's amazing. The whole Sugar Billy album is. Everyone know's Super Duper because Joss covered it.

I hope so. lol I don't know how many people here are that serious about records.

The direct link to the downloads of our shows is here:

We're also on MySpace - www.myspace.com/midnightsoulstice

But like I said, I don't want to make this thread about the show. I want to encourage folks to post their own finds, discoveries and treasures, and we can use our show as a tool to make these tracks heard. smile

Clifford Coulter is a multi-instrumentalist and developed a few custom-made instruments branded with his own Coultron-trademark.
As far as i know he recorded maybe about 3 or a few more albums. The track below is from his album "Better Part Of Me", released around 1980 on CBS and produced by Bill Withers.
Bill also contributed with some instrumentation to the recording-sessions and wrote a brief introduction on the backsleeve :

I was thrilled that Escrow (an independent record-company in the UK) reissued a few years back the album of the group Crystal Winds, from Chicago.
Escrow reissued also the mega-rare album of the group Timeless Legend.

Crystal Winds are Paul Coleman and Cortez Brown, and on "First Flight" perform also a number of other guest-musicians : http://www.discogs.com/Cr...se/1313947

Love Ain't Easy : http://www.youtube.com/wa...eXBJDjU0WI

Crystal Winds' album was originally released around 1982 on the Chicago-based Cash Ear Records, which had in the same year a few more album-releases such as these :

A great classic song with a touch of Zapp. Dick Smith's one-time album, released around 1983, is a relatively lesser-known project from Roger Troutman's production-catalogue.
Other performed classics on that album are "Sunny" and "Tobacco Road" :

Discovered this tribute-track on the lp-compilation, Disco Strut 3 : http://www.discogs.com/Va...ase/144330
Before that i had only seen copies of McKinley's 70's output, and wasn't aware that he released this around 1984 :

thumbs up! Thanks for the heads up MrSoulpower !

That's a cool Coulter-track which you posted, with a solid trumpet-solo and the song going to a higher key after that solo. Dig the artwork too ! I'll be checking those other albums on one of my upcoming vinyl-digs.
Another great thing with sites like Youtube is that sometimes family-members post a comment below the clip. In this case, one comment came from Monica Coulter, who represents herself on Youtube as "MoComuzik".

Another group from Chicago who released 2 albums around 1982 under 2 different groupnames and on 2 different labels. Bought the original Maxx Traxx album years ago for an astronomical price, lol.
A few years after that, the Maxx Traxx album was reissued and it's still available for a payable price.

Great topic, bro! fro
Inspired me to take some pictures wink

Here goes...

The Modulations - It's Rough Out Here

Released in 1975 on Buddha records, these guys never got the credit they deserved. They also appeared on Soul Train, but apparently that didn't boost album/singles sales enough, and this is the only album the guys ever released. It's pretty much a killer album from start to finish, and I definitely recommend picking it up, if you should come by it.

Billy Butler & Infinity - Hung Up On You

Another one-off project, this time featuring Jerry Butler's brother Billy. The album is a bit uneven, but contains one absolute killer tune.
This one,

The Fabulous Waller Family - Love Moods

A family album, as the name implies, released in 1980. Another one-off story, which is indeed a shame since the album is mostly amazing. It contains some incredible mellow tunes. Definitely worth picking up!
(Unfortunately, no one has uploaded any clips of the Waller Family on YouTube)

Peace, Justice & Equality - It's Time

An obscure vocal group album released in 1976. Has three great ballads on it, but the rest of the material is pretty much filler (... or downright horrible). These guys were definitely not made for uptempo material.

This seems to be the same band, but it's from a different album. Nonetheless, you'll get an idea as to what these dudes sound like

The Majestic Arrows - The Magic Of The Majestic Arrows

Released on the Chicago based Bandit label, this is in fact the label's only LP release (they did release a bunch of 45s though). The album is vocal group soul, performed by a group of two men and two women. Another absolute killer album, definitely worth picking up

First Class - Coming Back To You

A rare Japanese release featuring tracks from the group First Class, who recorded on Stang/All Platinum (the label also featured such acts as The Moments and The Whatnauts). A quality male soul vocal group

Prince Phillip Mitchell - Make It Good
Prince Phillip Mitchell - Top Of The Line

Two killer albums by Prince Phillip Mitchell, who was mostly a songwriter, but also recorded some albums. These two albums were released in the late 70's, and neither got the attention they deserve. Great albums!

Smoke - Risin'

An obscure sweet soul LP from 1976, released on the J Bridge label. The album opens with a dud, but the rest of the cuts are all killer. The album is worth around 200$.

And finally, a bunch of 45's...

Executive Suite - Hey! Pearl

The final (as far as I know) single released by the vocal group Executive Suite. They also released one full LP, titled "Executive Suite 1".
Since Hey! Pearl is not on YouTube, here's another, great song from the group

Bad News Band - Diamond Feather

Released in 1981, I'm not sure if the band actually ever released anything else in addition to this one single. The flipside is an ok uptempo cut, but the A side is a smokin' hot sweet soul tune.

The High Keys - Let's Take A Chance

A great, sweet vocal group tune.

The Quadraphonics - Prove My Love To You

A sweet soul tune released in 1974 on Innovation II Records.

Tomorrow's Promise - You're Sweet, You're Fine, You're Everything

Another killer sweet soul tune. This one was released in 1973 on Capitol Records.

Okay, a few more.

The Three Pieces - I need you girl
I've mentioned their album Vibes of Truth before, but it's such an amazing record, it deserves more recognition. Donald Byrd produced in 1975, and if you love the Mizell sound, you'll drool over this album. It's one of the best ten albums on my personal all time favorites list. I actually managed to track down the original three members of The Three Pieces, and I'll meet with them next month, because I'll write a story about the record for Waxpoetics Magazine. But for now, listen to this track and let me know if you're feelin' it.
