Jesse Johnsons Revue (KeyBoard Question)

Does anyone know what type of Synthesizer was used on the majority of this album?

i really need some help figuring out how to get certain sounds used in a lot of mpls based music

Dude, I've been trying since the late 80's to do that!smile

I believe the signature Minny sound is Oberheim but not the one linked above, the OB-x or Ob-xa I think. it's like the one used in the Van Halen Jump song/video.

They were analog and today's digital don't really sound as fat. you can get new virtual analog but I am not that familiar with them (but I think there is Oberheim one).

What I do, using a Motif classic, is layer 3 of the synth-brass patches together. it's never going to sound exact.

I notice the Time in current tours use Nord synths too.

Other popular synths around those years were models such as the Korg Poly-6, Mini Moog, Prophet 5, Roland Juno, Yamaha DMX
Found a site with some sound-samples : http://www.sonicprojects....dbank.html

Mark Cardenas, one of JJ-Revue's keyboardists who was also part of The Time during the Ice Cream Castle-album and the Purple Rain-movie, might be able to give some info too.
He has his own myspace and i noticed him posting on a yahoo-group of Yamaha-synths : http://launch.groups.yaho...essage/485

I'm sure that these guys were not using stock patches. Even if u get the exact board, u will have 2 tweak the patches, do some layering and figure out what EFX were used on the instrument.

Try this. Take a sample from the song/instrument u are trying 2 copy.
Loop the sample and tweak your synth against the sample. Works like a charm.

Mark Cardenas is out here in Seattle, playing in various projects. I've had the pleasure of jamming w/him on occasion. maybe I'll ask him what he used back then.....
