80's Song Of The Day: "Single Life" by Cameo Been jamming to this song lately, I absolutely love it. The drums and keyboards in this song are fierce! This tune is the theme song of my life.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

What's funny is, when I looked up the lyrics online, it said, "I'd drive you up the wall", instead of, "I'd tie you up for awhile". Now I know that lyric is incorrect. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

When she would come over our house...and that song came on we used to say "Shayla, Shayla, Shayla, Shayla, ... KNIFE!" And she used to scream and say "NO!!!" I didnt find this song again until 2002, I never knew Cameo sung it. [Edited 4/21/09 8:38am] Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Single Life was the better jam but for some reason i was always feeling the lyrics of attack me with your love and me with my 1985 high top hair would always try to lay that down on the ladies. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

It's OK. This song always sounded to me like it was preparing for "Word Up" later. Andy is a four letter word.

I wouldn't say they completely sold out but it's no secret they were trying to gain an audience that they didn't have from the start and it's cool but some people act like word up and candy are the best songs they've ever done. Don't laugh at my funk

You're not a huge fan of word up either. Actually, I love "Word Up". I just don't consider it to be Cameo's greatest song or "one hit wonder" like the pop world seems to think. I like it a hell of a lot better than "Back And Forth" or "Candy". Andy is a four letter word.

Man I was watching a video on YouTube and I heard some unknown pop-rock, or whatever they were, group covering "Word Up", I turned the fucking volume down.

I don't think they were trying to get a pop hit with "Word Up", it just happened. I do think they mellowed out too much after the "Alligator Woman" album. But speaking of still throwing down after they had a pop hit with "Word Up", they did continue to get off when they recorded "You Make Me Work" on their next album. But as a whole, no they weren't as great as they were up until 1982. But then again, no one was as great as they were in the early 80s including both Prince and Rick James, or even The Barkays for that matter. Andy is a four letter word.

Yeah maybe "sold out" wasn't the right word but you did say that a lot of the funk groups fell out after the early '80s trying to do other music, lol.

Some were slowing all their music down in an attempt to achieve adult contemporary crossover pop success like Shitney Houston achieved. Others were trying to copy Prince's early Minneapolis Sound in hopes that they could achieve the great heights that he had with "Purple Rain". And others were just trying to crossover period. They stopped focusing on making great music for the audiences that loved them and started focusing on trying to reach the largest audience possible which weakened their music. Yep, which is sad, because their stuff pre-Whitney/Purple Rain/Thriller was the best.

Skin im in, In the night, and soul tightened were the best songs on the Machismo album. The rest of the album sounded like a Word Up, Candy, and Little boys, dangerous toys replay. Honey=Candy You make me work=Word Up Pretty Girls=Word Up DKWIG=Little Boys, Dangerous Toys I thought I want it now from the next album was one of their best songs since Single Life and thought Cameo had gotten that killer instinct back but the Real men wear black album sucked ass outside of three songs. In fact those guys cancelled a tour with basic black in my hometown because ticket sales were going nowhere. Don't laugh at my funk

This is true. That's why I mostly prefer funk music from the early 80s.Nobody was overly concerned with "crossing over",the jams were still hard and funky. After the success of 'Thriller' and 'Purple Rain',things changed drastically.Alot of these bands were determined to cross over and reach a wider audience.I'm sure that their record labels put alot of pressure on them, too.

The 'Word Up' album crossed over, but I give Cameo credit for still keeping things funky. The album crossed over by accident. The song "Word Up" is as funky as their earlier jams but for some reason, the pop audiences paid attention this time.
