Whoever said Diana & Marvin was an underrated album...

...are absolutely RIGHT!!! biggrin

Those two were magic together in spite of the "drama" that supposedly happened between them in the studio (the weed incident, lol), other than that, their vocals gelled together.

My favorite tracks so far are "Don't Knock My Love", "You Are Everything", "Love Twins", "I'm Falling in Love With You" and "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)". smile

Yeah, Marvin said to Berry Gordy that he didn't wanna record if he couldn't smoke his weed, lol. I think for better judgment, that they recorded the album separately.

I love that album. Don't forget the great bonus tracks on the reissue, especially "I'll Keep My Light in My Window" and "The Things I Will Not Miss."

was this album a hit?

Was it conceived as "the new Marvin Gaye album" (featuring Diana Ross), the follow up to Trouble Man or What's Going On?
You know what I mean, did people have the feeling Marvin was releasing two albums in 1973??

Diana was a bigger commercial star for Motown at the time, which is why she received first billing. The album was a mild success here in the US, but it was more popular in the UK. 2 singles in the US ("You're a Special Part of Me" and "My Mistake") made the top 20 pop and R&B. In the UK, the 2 Stylistics covers ("You Are Everything" and "Stop, Look, Listen") were successful.

As Alexde pointed out, Diana was the bigger star of the two. I think it was also to bring Marvin to worldwide audiences outside of the US and UK. Marvin was known very well all over the world but not to the point Diana's was. It actually helped build Marvin's popularity in some other countries because of the singles released.

I don't know. It's a possibility they did... I saw something on Marvin's biography that when they were starting to make the album in 1971, Rhonda was still pregnant with her first child and when the baby was born, because Diana had married a white man, and the baby was very brown-skinned, rumors spread that that child was Marvin & Diana's "love child".

Marvin and Diana both quickly debunked that rumor. Marvin was still (unhappily) married to Berry Gordy's sister and Diana of course was married. The baby's father ended up being Berry's oddly, lol. But it was said to have had added to the buzz surrounding the album.

Yeah they did. lol In fact Martha Reeves said that every woman in the Motown building was STANNING on Marvin and were depressed (almost) when Marvin married Anna Gordy. I think I did hear that Diana fancied Marvin. Plus she wanted to work with him for years before they even got together, lol.

Who knows? I remember reading Eddie Kendricks (of the Tempts) had "the hots" for her but apparently Motown execs wouldn't allowed it.

I've never been overly fond of Diana's voice, but for some reason, together with Marvin's it became magic.

That's because everything Marvin's crazy ass touched turned to gold! Musically, I mean.

Marvin made Diana cooler. wink

LOL

I mean, come on, people keep talking about how much Diana got top billing and yes she does have more vocal time than Marvin in some songs, but in other songs like "Don't Knock My Love" and "You Are Everything", Marvin dominates. You know the reason "Stop, Look, Listen" gets sampled? Marvin, baby! cool

I first heard that song on his "Anthology" set. smile I heard "You're a Special Part of Me" on one of his 20th Century Masters set, Marvin sang a bit of "Love Twins" on his last concert tour, and the other songs like "Stop, Look, Listen", "Don't Knock My Love" and "You Are Everything" I heard online or in movies.
