When I was about 6 we had a friend across the hall named Shayla. When she would come over our house...and that song came on we used to say "Shayla, Shayla, Shayla, Shayla, ... KNIFE!" And she used to scream and say "NO!!!"

I didnt find this song again until 2002, I never knew Cameo sung it.

Actually, I love "Word Up". I just don't consider it to be Cameo's greatest song or "one hit wonder" like the pop world seems to think. I like it a hell of a lot better than "Back And Forth" or "Candy".

Not really. I don't think they were trying to get a pop hit with "Word Up", it just happened. I do think they mellowed out too much after the "Alligator Woman" album. But speaking of still throwing down after they had a pop hit with "Word Up", they did continue to get off when they recorded "You Make Me Work" on their next album. But as a whole, no they weren't as great as they were up until 1982. But then again, no one was as great as they were in the early 80s including both Prince and Rick James, or even The Barkays for that matter.

Most definately. Some were slowing all their music down in an attempt to achieve adult contemporary crossover pop success like Shitney Houston achieved. Others were trying to copy Prince's early Minneapolis Sound in hopes that they could achieve the great heights that he had with "Purple Rain". And others were just trying to crossover period. They stopped focusing on making great music for the audiences that loved them and started focusing on trying to reach the largest audience possible which weakened their music.

I thought I want it now from the next album was one of their best songs since Single Life and thought Cameo had gotten that killer instinct back but the
Real men wear black album sucked ass outside of three songs.
In fact those guys cancelled a tour with basic black in my hometown
because ticket sales were going nowhere.

This is true.That's why I mostly prefer funk music from the early 80s.Nobody was overly concerned with "crossing over",the jams were still hard and funky.After the success of 'Thriller' and 'Purple Rain',things changed drastically.Alot of these bands were determined to cross over and reach a wider audience.I'm sure that their record labels put alot of pressure on them,too.
