West Coast old school throwback: Sir Mix-A-Lot / SWASS .1988

「 SWASS ϟ Sir Mix-A-Lot 」.1988
「 SWASS ϟ Sir Mix-A-Lot 」.1988

I wanted to show some love for this tune. Most rap fans know the Seattle/West Coast/Pacific Northwest classic "Posse On Broadway" but this doesn't get much mention even though it's dope. If you're familiar with popular music in the last 5 years, you'll instantly know which popular song(s) sampled this tune. Hint: Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?

BTW, this is a JAM. And he put Seattle on map back then with this album.

FEEL MY BASS DRUMm [1:38] STOP IT. GET SILLY, SWASS. :turns: STOP IT. GET SILLY, SWASS. :turns: STOP IT. GET SILLY, SWASS. :turns: STOP IT. GET SILLY, SWASS. :turns:

Yeah I remember this. This was the sh*t back in the day. I searched for it on one of the many cassettes I've got stored away. Couldnt find it. I tried getting it on CD a few years back but couldn't find it. Buttermilk Biscuits was a guilty pleasure too.

I'm sitting here listening to Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Swass" album, as well as a song of his called "You Can't Slip" which was featured on the B-Side of the "Baby Got Back" single, and it's pretty much dawning on me that this dude was so far ahead of his time it wasn't funny. In fact, it's not just a shame that people are only going to remember this fellow for rapping all about how much he loved women with big arses. It is a travesty!

Why? Because this guy was doing "crunk music" way before there even WAS any "Crunk Music." Let's take a good listen to the song in question. Lyrically it's all about being a straight up pimp, yet the anti pimp at the same time, cause he can't stand it when a fella smacks a woman. He addressed his stance on this issue on the "Swass" album as well. Personally, it didn't really register with me what he was sayin' when this song 1st came 2 my attention...I was all of 10 after all, so I can't really be blamed for being so naieve....well, I don't think so anyway. Musically, it has that really slowed down beat which would later become a staple for the quote-unquote "crunk" sound. The flow is generally quite aggressive. Go listen to Little John or [insert name of popular rapper here] & you'll hear them doing the exact same thing that Mix is doing here.

Elsewhere on the record he speeds his voice up even higher than Prince or George Clinton ever did, uses a Linn Drum machine (VERY cool!) and combines rock guitars with an incredibly macho lead vocal.....okay... maybe that wasn't such a good example - Run DMC did that with Aerosmith a few years before he did with "Walk This Way."

All right then.... how 'bout THIS example right here???.....

Goodie Mob member Cee-Lo wrote a song called "Don't Cha," which he gave to a female singer called Tori Alamaze, right? But her version kinda went over a lot of people's heads. Then in 2004 an all-girl group called The Pussycat Dolls had a hit with the same song....."what does this have to do with Mix-A-Lot?" I her you ask. Well I'll tell ya! In the title track, Mix keeps repeating the phrase: "Don't you wish your boyfriend was Swass like me?" Very much in the same way those Pussy Cat Dolls asked the question of: "Don't you wish your girlfriend was a freak like me?"

So there ya have it.....Mix A Lot is a pioneer in Hip Hop....and nobody knows it. What a shame.

By the way speakin' of Prince - this dude's another one of those rappers who's obviously a huge fan of the Purple One. The "Romantic Interlude" is basically his version of one of those seductive ballads of P's...although he doesn't quite manage to pull it off, but that's cool cuz it's still pretty fun for me to listen to. Also he's sampled Prince a couple of times. In particular "Batdance" on the song "Beepers" from his "Seminar" album....not to mention the reference to "777-9311" in the same song, as well as the sample of Prince yelpin' "Shut up!!!" from "Housequake," which can be heard in the song "Lockjaw" from his "Mack Daddy" album. It even sounds like he sampled the drums from "Electric Chair" in the song "National Anthem," which followed "Beepers," but I could be wrong....maybe he was just trying to emulate that particular sound.

The Bottom line (No pun intended) is that it's not too late to check this dude out...go forth & look beyond the huge keester!

Yeah Mix was way ahead of his time no doubt. His worst raps were better than most of the crap out there now. Here is one of my favorites.
Check out the lyrics especially the ones in bold. The man is bad

Run for the hills cause the mack is back
I'm hookin' up girls by fax
If you're stacked
You can rub my big mack
I gotta gat
So don't worry about scraps
(no no)
Five foot eleven with a seven foot game
Gotta big mouth piece and I show no shame
Monster kinky have no morals
Monster loves to get oral (ummmm!)
Got ten cars and the girls like that
I was born and bred to be a mack
Whats your sign is played
You gotta put a little style in your game now a days
In the sixty's girls was all high
LSD had 'em given up thighs
The baby boom was on and I dropped
No more woodstock but now you got Mix-A-Lot

So put me in your CD changer
Watch your girl cause Mix's a re-arrange her
Ooo, he's sexist
Doo, he's sexist
Keepin Rush Limbaugh restless
Well I'm da' mack and that’s monster
Straight chase girls through the tail cause I wants to
You can call it wack
But you respect this black
When it comes to game I'm a monster mack

-Chorus:
Cause the Mix-A-Lot game is tough
Big Mack, Cause the Mix-A-Lot game is tough
I'm a monster mack
Lookin for sex
Bih bih bih big big mack

Strike the pose
But she aint nasty as me
Cause Mix-A-Lot is stuck on freaky
Can't stop tappin that tweety
Give it to the needy
Nope, cause I'm too damn greedy
Here I go walking through the mall
Don't play ball
But I got game for 'em all
Focus on a victim, Focus on a victim
Mr. Richard is hot so lets sick em
And like a tomahawk jumpin’’ on a skud
Girl you got to gimme my puh
The pick up king is back buddy
Tryin’ to give lessons to these fake ass ballers and understudies
But I'm not tryin’ to call you no bitch girl
Don't give a damn if your poor or rich girl
And we can play a pool
And I'm pokin’ that 8-ball cool
And the bootys
I still like the bootys
She got a little waist doin’ squats just to keep me on my duty
Giant size games what I droppin’
Straight freaks with them thick ol' gluts is what I'm knockin’
Now the right wing wanna test me
If likin’ sex is a crime then you arrest me
But don't tell me who to sing to Jack
Cause a third of your life is in the sack
I'm a monster mack

Man, you're droppin' that science on this one - that's sick, man - you my choice muphugga for this.

And yes, both P and Mix were Mack Daddies before Cross Criss ever heard the phrase.
