West Coast old school throwback: Sir Mix-A-Lot / SWASS .1988 「 SWASS ϟ Sir Mix-A-Lot 」.1988 「 SWASS ϟ Sir Mix-A-Lot 」.1988 I wanted to show some love for this tune. Most rap fans know the Seattle/West Coast/Pacific Northwest classic "Posse On Broadway" but this doesn't get much mention even though it's dope. If you're familiar with popular music in the last 5 years, you'll instantly know which popular song(s) sampled this tune. Hint: Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me? BTW, this is a JAM. And he put Seattle on map back then with this album. FEEL MY BASS DRUMm [1:38] STOP IT. GET SILLY, SWASS. :turns: STOP IT. GET SILLY, SWASS. :turns: STOP IT. GET SILLY, SWASS. :turns: STOP IT. GET SILLY, SWASS. :turns: ... [Edited 4/12/09 20:53pm]

Yeah I remember this. This was the sh*t back in the day. I searched for it on one of the many cassettes I've got stored away. Couldnt find it. I tried getting it on CD a few years back but couldn't find it. Buttermilk Biscuits was a guilty pleasure too.

I'm sitting here listening to Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Swass" album, as well as a song of his called "You Can't Slip" which was featured on the B-Side of the "Baby Got Back" single, and it's pretty much dawning on me that this dude was so far ahead of his time it wasn't funny. In fact, it's not just a shame that people are only going to remember this fellow for rapping all about how much he loved women with big arses. It is a travesty! Why? Because this guy was doing "crunk music" way before there even WAS any "Crunk Music." Let's take a good listen to the song in question. Lyrically it's all about being a straight up pimp, yet the anti pimp at the same time, cause he can't stand it when a fella smacks a woman. He addressed his stance on this issue on the "Swass" album as well. Personally, it didn't really register with me what he was sayin' when this song 1st came 2 my attention...I was all of 10 after all, so I can't really be blamed for being so naieve....well, I don't think so anyway. Musically, it has that really slowed down beat which would later become a staple for the quote-unquote "crunk" sound. The flow is generally quite aggressive. Go listen to Little John or [insert name of popular rapper here] & you'll hear them doing the exact same thing that Mix is doing here. Elsewhere on the record he speeds his voice up even higher than Prince or George Clinton ever did, uses a Linn Drum machine (VERY cool!) and combines rock guitars with an incredibly macho lead vocal.....okay... maybe that wasn't such a good example - Run DMC did that with Aerosmith a few years before he did with "Walk This Way." All right then.... how 'bout THIS example right here???..... Goodie Mob member Cee-Lo wrote a song called "Don't Cha," which he gave to a female singer called Tori Alamaze, right? But her version kinda went over a lot of people's heads. Then in 2004 an all-girl group called The Pussycat Dolls had a hit with the same song....."what does this have to do with Mix-A-Lot?" I her you ask. Well I'll tell ya! In the title track, Mix keeps repeating the phrase: "Don't you wish your boyfriend was Swass like me?" Very much in the same way those Pussy Cat Dolls asked the question of: "Don't you wish your girlfriend was a freak like me?" So there ya have it.....Mix A Lot is a pioneer in Hip Hop....and nobody knows it. What a shame. By the way speakin' of Prince - this dude's another one of those rappers who's obviously a huge fan of the Purple One. The "Romantic Interlude" is basically his version of one of those seductive ballads of P's...although he doesn't quite manage to pull it off, but that's cool cuz it's still pretty fun for me to listen to. Also he's sampled Prince a couple of times. In particular "Batdance" on the song "Beepers" from his "Seminar" album....not to mention the reference to "777-9311" in the same song, as well as the sample of Prince yelpin' "Shut up!!!" from "Housequake," which can be heard in the song "Lockjaw" from his "Mack Daddy" album. It even sounds like he sampled the drums from "Electric Chair" in the song "National Anthem," which followed "Beepers," but I could be wrong....maybe he was just trying to emulate that particular sound. The Bottom line (No pun intended) is that it's not too late to check this dude out...go forth & look beyond the huge keester!
